  • ... that in 1814, 7,000 Brighton residents ate plum pudding and roast beef and played kiss-in-the-ring at The Level to celebrate Napoleon's defeat by the Allied powers?From Fines (2002) p26: "One momentous celebration was held in August 1814 to mark the overthrow of Napoleon. Roast beef and plum puddings were served to 7,000 people and a whole range of activities organised, such as dancing, 'foot-racing', blind-man's-buff, stoolball and 'kiss-in-the-ring'."

  • Comment: I haven't linked War of the Sixth Coalition, Napoleon or anything like that so the focus remains on the nominated article. "By the Allied powers" could be trimmed off. Article was started by Mujinga on 24th March and expanded a bit with new references by me today (30th). The vast feast is covered by Fines (2002) (ref [11]), Erredge (1862) (ref [12]) and also several other sources, but Fines also mentions kiss-in-the-ring and the various other entertainments.

Cheers @Epicgenius:. I've got a QPQ review underway now (Template:Did you know nominations/Notarial Archives (Malta)), which I aim to complete within a couple of hours. Erredge (1862) (ref [11]) states that at the tables were seated upwards of 7,000 persons; Fines (2002) (ref [12]) just states Roast beef and plum puddings were served to 7,000 people as a round figure.
