Theora Hamblett[edit]

  • ... that Mississippi artist Theora Hamblett started painting in her mid-fifties?

Created by Penny Richards (talk). Self nominated at 01:37, 2 January 2015 (UTC).

  • Article is new enough and long enough. No pic, presumably due to copyright. Article is well referenced with inline references in the correct places. AGF on the several articles behind paywalls etc. I don't think, strictly speaking, that the references are correctly formatted as normally the hyperlink is only from the title of the work, not from the whole reference but I don't think that is a deal-breaker. Hook is correctly formatted and hook fact is cited in the article with an inline ref immediately after. The hook is factually correct but could be more interesting. Article is neutral. I detect no close paraphrasing or copyvios. I could tick it now but it really does need a more interesting hook first! Philafrenzy (talk) 18:16, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Note: Are any of the paintings owned by the US State Dept free of copyright as owned by the Federal Govt? If not, then can a picture of the artist or one of her works be added to the article under a fair use rationale so that readers have something to look at? Thank you for taking the time to review my nomination. Another wikipedian is looking for a useable image for this entry (I agree, there must be something, and artist bios should have images if at all possible). As for the hook--also agreed, needs to be hookier! I saw claims in various reliable sources that she was the first Mississippi artist to be shown at the Museum of Modern Art, but I wasn't confident that was confirmed enough to use it as the hook. Let me chase that claim a little more right now.Penny Richards (talk) 19:20, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Penny Richards
Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:22, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Okay; can't find a source that's super-reliable on the "first" (think she probably was, given the date, but it would take original research to confirm the claim right now); but it's safe to say she was among the first. So how about something like:
I AGF that the source makes that specific claim as it is offline. Good to go. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:57, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Hooray! Thank you for your patience with this nomination.Penny Richards (talk) 17:20, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Penny Richards
And now the page has an image of the artist (not my doing, but I'm very happy to see it!).Penny Richards (talk) 05:21, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Penny Richards
If you include some critical commentary on one of her works you could add an image of a painting under a fair use rationale as well... Philafrenzy (talk) 10:27, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
