Maryland HLR is a template that simplifies and better organizes reference calls to the Maryland State Highway Administration's (MDSHA) Highway Location Reference (HLR), an annual publication that serves as a major resource for articles about portions of the Maryland highway system. The HLR provides milepoint and length data, crossroad names and classification, segment traffic data, and some bridge and signage information about all state highways, which include Interstate Highways, U.S. Highways, and Maryland state highways and all levels of classification from freeways to service roads. The resource also includes county maps of state highways and updates to the state highway system within particular counties within the relevant year. Each annual edition—the editions from between 1999 and 2015 are accessible online—is split into a document for each of the 23 counties of Maryland. There is also an HLR document for the independent city of Baltimore (usually referenced as Baltimore City) for 2005.

Usage[edit]

In its most basic form, this template provides a link to the HLR webpage of the MDSHA website. There are no mandatory parameters; however, there are several optional parameters that make the template very useful for referencing information in the publication.

year: a four-digit year between 1999 and 2022. The default value is 2022.
countyX: name of the county. Replace X with a number between 1 and 9. Use the properly spelled name of the county without the generic County at the end. For St. Mary's County, you must use the abbreviation for Saint; Saint Mary's will not work. Up to nine counties may be included in each use of this template. Use Baltimore City for the HLR document for Baltimore only if the year parameter is 2005; otherwise, the output will be incorrect. Baltimore City must be called in the county1 parameter. There is no prohibition on calling other counties in the same template as calling Baltimore City, but that would only occur in the very unlikely situation you were referencing the county HLR of the same year as the Baltimore City HLR referenced.
pageX: page number referenced in the HLR document for county X.
pagesX: same as pageX, but takes multiple pages. There is no prohibition on using both page parameters for the same county, but the output will be messy.
link: set to yes to link Maryland State Highway Administration.
access-date: date the HLR was accessed. Date may be in any format. (Alias: accessdate)

The county HLR files are accessed from the Maryland State Highway Administration website. The Baltimore City HLRs are stored on a third-party website.
