Hey, can we reduce the size some? I think it would be less overpowering to the page, and maybe the basemap wouldn't look so fuzzy, if it were reduced from 400px wide to maybe 350px wide. Also, for some reason the Birmingham sites are showing up in Tuscaloosa County, rather than central Jefferson County. Altairisfartalk 03:37, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the basemap looks like that b/c it's over land. I based the format generally on what I did for Florida NHLs. I reduced it, see what you think. I didn't want to shrink it too much, to keep the text from adjacent sites from clumping together.
Oh, and to explain my methodology. The names aren't where the sites are located, that's what the dots are for. If there's several in one location (like Huntsville or Mobile), I make one big dot and put the names of all the sites next to it. Alabama was easier than Florida in some ways, as there's large areas with no NHLs which I could use for "whitespace". The ones here in Florida are scattered all over the place, and St. Augustine was really fun. Now that I think of it, perhaps some sort of map legend might be in order to elaborate on that. Hmm...
Btw, I shamelessly borrowed a bunch of your formatting ideas and such for Florida, which is partly why I did the Alabama map, to return the favor. Hopefully, I can get ours to FL too. I like that better, I completely understand why it couldn't be much smaller. I tweaked the locator dot for Birmingham, hope you don't mind. The dot was in Tuscaloosa County. No, not minding at all! I used the locations from the NRHP database, which are mostly right, but it's great that someone who knows more about the state can refine it.
