link[edit]

I'm currently using [[talk:{{NAMESPACE}}:{{PAGENAME}}|talk page]] which should work on all spaces perfectly but I'm interested in knowing if this will work everywhere and if this is the most efficent way to link to an archive page's talk page since this would require pulling up the link every time a user loaded the page. This is a sister template to Template:Talkarchive. This specific template is designed for use on page archives, the major difference between this and the talk archive tag is that this jas a talk page link and it is phrased slightly differently. Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 04:57, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

Merge direction[edit]

Izno the consensus was to merge to {{Archive}}, right? And it says to {{Talkarchive}} because that was the way I put it in the nom before the discussion made it clear {{Archive}} should be the final title? --Trialpears (talk) 21:53, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Trialpears I can see how you are reading that {{archive}} would be the better title. I have no concern over making the final page name {{archive}}. --Izno (talk) 22:35, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Following up on this, perhaps this template should be redirected to {{Automatic archive navigator}}, a similar template which additional supports a navigation bar for previous and later archive pages, so that many archives take advantage of this. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 18:39, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Matthiaspaul, That proposal was closed as no consensus a few weeks ago at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2020 August 24#Template:Automatic archive navigator. It is one of those TfDs I may try again on in a year or so with some extra preparations with regards to the implementation so I wouldn't consider it completly dead. --Trialpears (talk) 19:02, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the pointer, I missed that discussion. Technically, it is possible, and the benefit would be huge for the majority of archive pages, so it should be done eventually.

Template-protected edit request on 5 September 2020[edit]

It would be good to be able to go directly to the article page from an archived talk page. I suggest adding the link to the article next to the link to the main talk page, on the top left, just below "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". See for example Talk:Black_hole/Archive_14. We could change it from:

"< Talk:Black hole"

to:

"Talk:Black hole - Article:Black hole"

I have removed the leadign "<" sign, but we could keep it if that is the preferred option. Vpab15 (talk) 11:17, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:35, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Vpab15: this sounds like something the devs would have to handle. You might want to consider opening a feature request at the Wikimedia Phabricator. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 02:35, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks To editor Paine Ellsworth: , I have created task [[1]]. Vpab15 (talk) 10:07, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it important to have this functionality in the web interface itself. Wouldn't it be sufficient if the {{talkarchive}} (or {{Talkarchivenav}} etc) header template contained that link? (I mean, it's a job we can do ourselves, right?) Would save us having to involve the devs... CapnZapp (talk) 09:47, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Link to page discussed[edit]

I came here to ask the same thing:

To reduce the number of clicks needed to return to the page under discussion, can we add a link to change:

This page is an archive of past discussions.

to something like:

This page is an archive of past discussions about Example.

Are there any edge cases where this would not be appropriate, that need to be catered for? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:28, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pigsonthewing You should have that discussion at {{aan}} since this template will be redirected there shortly because of the merger. --Trialpears (talk) 16:21, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but "The result of the discussion was merge to Template:Archive and delete Template:Archive navigation after conversion". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:37, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're not wrong. The name that will be used is Archive, but the code is that of aan since that one already has navigation. Hence any edits made to this page will soon not be in use. --Trialpears (talk) 20:52, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 7 January 2021[edit]

Copy the contents of Template:Archive/sandbox, which adds categories, into Template:Archive. JsfasdF252 (talk) 17:13, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done (WP:BRD - assume we are at step 3 now). @JsfasdF252: this will need a lot more discussion, several initial issues: it will categorize 200,000+ pages; the categories created will be redlinks (e.g. Category:Mediawiki_talk_page_archives); that may not be the best naming convention for the categories. I suggest you start a discussion to gain consensus that this project-specific categorization is useful first. — xaosflux Talk 16:01, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
