Nice template![edit]

Would it also be possible to display a total across all categories? PC78 (talk) 22:56, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that should be easy using the #expr parser function. Want to have a go? Martin 23:11, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Easy it may be, but I honestly don't know how. :( PC78 (talk) 23:37, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Table class[edit]

Regarding recent edits, what is the problem with the wikitable class? It looks nice on my browser and the version I just reverted had no vertical lines between the cells and looked a bit rubbish.

And there is no need for the plainlinks class: the only "external" link is the purge link, and that template already uses plainlinks. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:37, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because in Firefox it looks like crap - Lines are missing between the sections and it sits on the left side instead of being centered like all other templates used on the various category pages. (I tried it on several computers with the same result.) Also, Because IE does not fully support CSS, it displays it improperly.
Additionally the {{Cat class}} template does not have lines separating the sections, so my edits bring it in line with the it. It should be using the toc plainlinks noprint class like {{Cat class}}, which it emulates.--Jeremy (blah blah) 07:53, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm using Firefox and all the lines are there for me! I have no problem with the table being centred, and left that edit in. By "similar templates" do you mean Template:Cat class and friends? As these have only one row they are really a table in the true sense of the word. I'm not sure we have to follow their style here? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:57, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I set it to the same class as {{Cat class}} and it looks so much sharper. Look at how it looks on the Category:Foodservice articles by quality page pared with the {{CategoryTOC}} template. You did such a good job creating it, I just want it to look its best and have it behave like the other templates. --Jeremy (blah blah) 08:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy that you have tried to improve the template. I still think it looks better with the lines, and I'm slightly disappointed that you have imposed your version despite being reverted once and didn't wait for further opinions ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:14, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It can always be reverted, and I am not trying to impose anything. How about we make it a variable to give people the option? I am going to add {{{format|wikitable}}} so people can decide for themselves. As you can see I set it to default your desired format. I also edited the documentation to show the option. --Jeremy (blah blah) 08:29, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The format parameter was a good idea. One reason why I prefer the lines is that in the example you have just posted, the digits 1,291 1,186 99 69 all run together on my screen. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:33, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, have you tried this with the importance articles? --Jeremy (blah blah) 08:45, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, not yet. You want to do it? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:17, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another display issue[edit]

I am working on a Windows 7 machine w/ Firefox 3, Opera 9.6 and IE 8 in standards mode and it displays the whole thing differently:

  • In Firefox and Opera it is so long that it displays off the screen and I am using a 16 x 9 display.
  • In IE 8 the headings are truncated with the last few letters missing on each word. (I was on an XP sp3 box yesterday).

I haven't checked Chrome or Safari yet (not installed yet), but my guess is that they will behave like Firefox. --Jeremy (blah blah) 17:03, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think any projects use every possible class, so normally the width is not a problem. Yeah, I know it looks rubbish on IE. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:15, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Format problem[edit]

When adding the "format" para., it doesn't use "bold" font in naming the WP and the refresh button, could you fix this? I'm also not sure, where is the toc coming from, from the page it's on? Please clarify in instructions. Thanks. --Funandtrvl (talk) 16:04, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is calling on Wikipedia's defined style sheet (CSS). The "toc" is one of the defined styles, and any formatting is defined in that. Not using it will default to the original settings created in the template. --Jeremy (blah blah) 16:19, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Taskforces[edit]

Can we set this up to handle task forces? I think if we did some thing along the line of adding a switch similar to the one in the {{Project assessments}} template would work wonders. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 19:54, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Something like Template:Taskforce articles by quality perhaps? -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:05, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Width[edit]

Should there be a way to produce this list in two rows? In many cases it is wider than the page. 117Avenue (talk) 04:45, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image-Class[edit]

Is it now time to remove the Image-Class section from this template? -- WOSlinker (talk) 18:06, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Non-standard classes[edit]

It would be nice to have a parameter like |selection= with choices like |selection=standard, |selection=nonstandard and |selection=all. A lot of wikiprojects create masks to keep track of nonstandard classes and end up with quality-importance tables that have lots of blanks because most of the nonstandard classes have NA importance (e.g., Wikiproject_physics#Current_status_of_physics_articles). I would like to be able to display just the standard classes in a quality-importance table and use this template to display the non-standard classes. Template-protected edit request on 19 December 2018[edit]

Change current code here to code in {{Articles by Quality/sandbox}}.

Change current code at {{Articles by Quality/total}} to code in {{Articles by Quality/total/sandbox}}.

Discussion:

These changes result from chasing a bug in which this template does not display the correct totals. In carefully reviewing the existing code and documentation, I found the following issues:
  • non-existent Category:Bplus-Class articles still supported. It was added in the 07/2009 re-implementation of the code and never removed.
  • redirected Category:Image-Class articles was removed from this template 08/2010, but not removed from the /total subpage.
  • On 06/2011, the Category:FM-Class articles was added to this template, but not added to the /total subpage.
  • On 01/2014, the Category:Draft-Class articles was added to this template, but added only to the first (raw=yes) condition of the /total subpage. This causes the total displayed by this template to be short by the number of Draft class pages.
The edits made to the code in their respective sandboxes correct these errors. There should be no side effects, as the former Bplus and Image classes no longer exist, and the remaining changes simply add missing components to the total, so this is strictly a bug fix.
A number of other changes could also be made to properly support existing custom classes, namely Category:AL-Class articles, Category:BL-Class articles, Category:CL-Class articles, Category:SL-Class articles, and Category:SIA-Class articles, which are supported by neither template, but could be worked around with the custom1 & 2 parameters. The limitation of only 2 custom parameters could be a problem to projects using all 4 list classes. There is also the Category:User-Class articles, which was removed from this template on 10/2010, but not from the /total subpage. For projects that support the User class, and use the custom parameter work-around, this may cause the number of user pages to be added twice. Given that I'm not working with a project that support these classes, and haven't researched what work-arounds (if any) may have been implemented by them, I'm not submitting any potentially breaking changes, but thought I should bring your attention to the matter.
Thanks for your time and assistance. LibraryGeek (talk) 03:51, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done Thank you for such a thoroughly explained request — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:30, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Exclude a class?[edit]

Is it possible to exclude a class of article when the project does not use it? The Ireland WikiProject does not use the A-class rating. ww2censor (talk) 13:21, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If the category did not exist then it would not be shown when using this template. -- WOSlinker (talk) 16:01, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

format=toc[edit]

I just ran into one category using format=toc. I'm not sure why to use it, but Its in the doc too, and it is broken:

{{Articles by Quality|topic=AfC|project=Articles for creation|format=toc}} gives
