This new template covers campaign medals authorised by the Honourable East India Company (HEIC) prior to the transfer of Indian rule to the British Crown, under the Government of India Act 1858. It overlaps the template for British campaign medals, as this new template includes both:
- Earlier HEIC medals either awarded only to HEIC forces or, where issued to members of the British forces, were not recognised by the British Crown as official medals – with no permission to wear in British Army uniform. These medals do not belong in the British campaign medals template.
- Later HEIC medals that were awarded on the same basis to both HEIC and British forces, with immediate permission to wear alongside British medals bestowed by the British Crown. These medals also belong in the British campaign medals template.
