Non-trivial changes should be discussed in advance

@Joeyline, Primefac, Raymarcbadz, Sportsfan 1234, and VEO15:

The module is transcluded in 34,664 pages and even minor edit wars are inappropriate when changes have such an impact. Editing the module should be done with care and any disagreements should be discussed on the talk page. I recommend using Template talk:Country alias as it is the template that appears in articles and it is conventional for discussions about changes affecting the template to occur on its talk. The module talk page is usually either a redirect to the template talk, or is for discussion about technical issues regarding the module (that is, how the code works, not whether some data should be "Ivory Coast" or "Côte d'Ivoire").

By the way Primefac, it is time to remove the TODO note at the top. You may like to also keep or remove the EXA and EXX examples: whatever you think. Johnuniq (talk) 01:27, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Johnuniq, I've removed EXX, but EXA is used at {{infobox country at games}} (and, ostensibly, anywhere else where you'd want an example flag). I've also reworded the top comments so that it's less of a "To do" and more of a "here's a note about those duplicate entries". This is mainly so if (for example) South Africa's entry needed an update, it would clear that both codes would need to be updated.

As for the proper place to have a discussion, I suggest a soft redirect to Template talk:Country alias as mentioned; this way it's clear that the template is the main place for most discussions, but will not preclude discussions like this that should really be taking place on the module talk. Sound good?

Been doing some redirect research, and I have the possible solution. Hello! This is a message from me. Can you add the right flag alias for Belarus. I see that they only have the flag until 2012. PHI flag change request

Hi, I think there is a little mistake for Philippines flag here. right now this is what we see for the country at the 1986 Asian Games  Philippines but per Flag of the Philippines they changed their flag in February 1986 while the Asian Games were held much later on September. they used the "navy blue" flag for most of 1986 year including the Asian Games. they used that "light blue" flag from February 1985 to February 1986. Exactly the same goes to their 1998 flag, they used the old flag since February 1998 and the Asian Games were held in December 1998. maybe this is the better way to have it (I changed the year a bit)

Mohsen1248, from the table it says the current flag wasn't adopted until July 1986. I have no problem adding an exception for the Asian Games to shift it forward to navy blue, but as the light blue flag was used for the majority of 1986 I'm disinclined to change the entire year. Your comment about the 1984 flag is accurate, so I'll update that once we figure out the 1986 thing. Primefac (talk) 12:12, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

As far as I know Asian Games was the only event in that year of 1986. It doesn't matter to change the whole year or make an exception for the AG as long as the outcome is the same. btw I also had a comment on 1998 flag, consider that when you are making the changes. Thanks for the change, Unfortunately I just found few more cases, this time for Afghanistan per Flag of Afghanistan, they changed their flag on January 2004 which means they didn't use the old flag for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Another case is for Bahrain, while they changed their flag on February 2002, that flag is used for the entire 2002 year including the only event for Bahrain in this year, the Asian Games in October.

Another one for Burma (BIR), they changed the country's name on 1989. while they used their flag once on 1974. which means we are still using the old pre-74 flag for those years between 1974 to 1989. and to be accurate they also changed their flag on January 1974 which means they used the post-74 flag for the entire 1974 year. I think something like that will be good.

Few more change requests

Hi again, I checked few more countries and found this list.

• Iran, unfortunately I could not find when they exactly changed the flag on 1964 but based on pictures of 1964 Olympic reports, they used the 1964 version for 1964 Summer Olympics on October. but i have no idea about 1964 Winter Games in February. so you should probably make an exception for 1964 Summer Olympics.
• Iraq, back in 2004, thy changed their flag on June 2004 while the 2004 Olympics were held later the year. again in 2008, they changed the flag very early in January, they used the current flag for the entire 2008 including the Olympics.
• Mongolia, they started using their current flag from February 1992 during the winter olympics and months before the Summer Olympics, I assume you should change it to the current version only for the 1992 Summer Games. Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:45, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Looks like there are more flags for South Korea. per Template:Country data South Korea and Flag of South Korea, in current format we are using 1984-1997 flag for 1949 to 1997 ! here is the possible outcome

India at 2013

I see we have Olympic flag for India for the year of 2013, not sure if that's necessary because whenever India participated under Olympic flag they used another IOC code like IOA or something like that. but if that should stay, you have to make an exception for the 2013 World Games, they participated under the Indian flag there, Source. Mauritania's new flag, Malawi's flag at the 2012 games and Bulgaria's flag during the 1896-1936 Games

Mauritania has got a new flag with two red stripes (this means that every Olympics from 2020 will use this flag) and also, Malawi has flowned the current flag at the 2012 Olympics and Bulgaria has flowed the same as the current flag because the emblem didn't exist until 1946. Hong Kong and Wales at the Commonwealth Games

The Hong Kong flag for the Commonwealth Games needs to be its British colonial ensign, the territory's current SAR flag shows when the flagCGFteam template is used. Also, the flag for Wales in the 1930 and 1934 British Empire Games articles show up as the Saint George's cross when it should be the Red Dragon flag, which has been used to represent the country long before it gained official status in the 1950s. For Hong Kong, it should be . It was used until mid 1997, when sovereignty was transferred to China thus ceased being part of the Commonwealth. VEO^onefive 23:34, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

But in the {{flagCGF|HKG}} template and its corresponding article, the SAR flag is used ( Hong Kong). Surely it should be its most recent colonial flag in general usage (for instance, in the all-time Commonwealth Games medal table list)? VEO^onefive 00:30, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

If you put in {{flagCGF|HKG|1994}}, then sure, it'll show the most recent colonial flag ( Hong Kong), but when no year is given it defaults to the "newest" flag, which in this case is . We can't just ignore the post-1994 flag because the Olympics, World Athletics/Aquatics, etc all use this template as well, and since the Commonwealth Games are still occurring it's not like we can just cutoff {{flagCGF}} at '94 either. It's one of the downsides of having a meta template that handles as much as it does, but trust me when I say that this is easier to maintain than the (literally) hundreds of templates we used to have. Looking at the raw module code, I see that Anguilla's trigram is suffixed specially for the Commonwealth Games so the code is not mixed up with Angola's in other events. Owing to its unique position, could the same be applied to Hong Kong so its historic identity for the Commonwealth Games in general is correct, whilst preserving its current identity for the other games it competes in? I still believe it is an incorrect assumption based on what is being expressed in the press release. Individuals are to be referred to in the singular, but I still contend that the team should still be plural. Yes that is a valid point. However, we are referring to a collective group of many athletes. Additionally, referring to the hockey teams and curling teams as an "athlete" seems very awkward. But I guess it then would be "team OAR" for those sports as well as team skiing, team figure skating, and relays. To be honest, I'm just going off of official reports; I agree that it's about the strangest choice of wording/options ever. Asian Indoor Games

Hi, We had Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan and I want to ask for few changes because of that.

1. They use the name Tahiti for French Polynesia, I think maybe its better to use the name Tahiti for the NOC code of TAH, if not at least make an exception for the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and the Asian Games in general
2. for the New Caledonia, they use the French flag on the official website here, so better to change the flag at least for the 2017 AIMAG and the Asian Games. even though I watched the opening ceremony and they used both flags on their delegation, so I don't know what's the best here, but we better go with the official website.
3. for IOA, for the first time they are using the OCA flag, I think this should need an exception for this event to use the OCA flag instead of IOC.
4. and there is a Refugee Team with the code of ART. is it possible to use the term Refugee Team and not "Athlete Refugee Team" for this event ? they also use the OCA flag this time as well.
5. while FSM returns Federated States of Micronesia, still all wikipedia pages for this country just use Micronesia, example, we should change it here to just Micronesia or move all those pages to Federated States of Micronesia. Mohsen1248 (talk) 12:41, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

2. Not sure. Based on New Caledonia, they actually have both flags as their official flag. However, I don't see New Caledonia listed on 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games or any of the related pages (I see they participated in Bowling, which doesn't have a separate 2017 AIMAG page).
3.  Not done. At one point I actually uploaded File:Olympic Council of Asia flag.png, but due to licensing/copyright issues we actually cannot host the flag (even in small/icon sizes)
4.  Done Checking... - Should be doable, given that they're not the "Olympic" refugee team. The "A" is still in ART, but that's mostly unavoidable and probably not the end of the world.
5.  Not done Checking... - I know there's a reason for this, just not sure why... succinctness? I'll look into it. See below.

If we can't use the OCA flag, then the Olympic flag is the next best thing. as for New Caledonia, obviously 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is not updated , as u see New Caledonia participated in the competition (even if with only 1 or 2 athletes) and Bowling will have a separate page very soon. we also have this page with the other New Caledonia flag. but as you said they use both flags (even at the opening ceremony), I'm fine with both but since the official website uses the French flag, i think that's better.

and for the Refugee team, at the Olympics they used the code ROT. but here they use ART (same as IAAF for the IAAF World Champs) but without the word "Athlete" and with OCA flag and since we can't use that, the Olympic flag. Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:24, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

I do apologize. I could have sworn I asked the Multi-sports WikiProject for input, but I cannot seem to find the thread now. I will ask them and get back to you. As for ART, we cannot change the name of the team (it's hard-coded in) but the |name= parameter in {{flagIOC2}} allows for a custom name to be displayed, e.g.  Refugee Team. OK, I understand if we can't change the name for ART. as for other matters, that's OK to ask for other opinions but I think it's clear that they used the French flag for New Caledonia and the code TAH obviously stands for Tahiti . if they use French Polynesia somewhere else for other events, they use the code PYF or something else and not TAH. GBR giving wrong name

 Not done. Most of the pages related to  Great Britain say something along the lines of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland competed as Great Britain at... (or just say "Great Britain"). If this change is to be made, it should probably be made across the article text as well as the template, and for that you'd need a larger consensus. FRY

Could someone please add the country alias FRY with the name FR Yugoslavia. This country appeared at the Olympics from 1994 until 2002. After that it was renamed "Serbia and Montenegro" but that name had not been coined at all back in the 90's. They used the same flag both as FR Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro. What do you mean you see no evidence. Our individual articles on the team's campaigns (e.g. Atlanta 1996 clearly shows they competed as Yugoslavia, not Serbia and Montenegro. You misunderstood. I meant the code FRY - it's not a real IOC code as far as I can tell.

You are right, the country code they used was still YUG as with the SFR Yugoslavia. Still they didn't use the name or flag of Serbia&Montenegro and thus we should have another optional name for YUG, like we have with Great Britain following the above discussion.Tvx1 19:06, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

A rather convincing argument was emailed to me regarding how the "old" YUG flag should be used for the generic cases were "Yugoslavia" is mentioned, since that's the most likely era they're referring to. I am happy to add in exception for the 2001 World Games (though a link to that page would be helpful since I can't find it) and I'm also open to further discussion about which flag should be shown for the "general" case of when something like {{flagIOC|YUG}}, which displays as  Yugoslavia, is shown. Well I guess the SFR flag fits better for Yugoslavia in general. Yugoslavia mostly refers to the old Yugoslavia. but for a short period of time for few years they were known as Yugoslavia while they were "Serbia and Montenegro" they even participated at 1998 FIFA World Cup under Serbia/Montenegro Flag but with the name "Yugoslavia". I can't understand why we need exceptions only for the Olympics, from 1993 to 2002 they were still "Yugoslavia" but with Serbia/Montenegro Flag. to me the best solution is to use the "new" flag for 1993-2002 and the Old flag for the rest including Yugoslavia at the Olympics. Hi, based on Flag of Poland, Poland used the new flag from January 1980. but per {1980, "Flag of Poland (1928-1980).svg"}, we use this flag for the year of 1980 as well. while they used the new flag for almost the whole year specially 1980 Summer Olympics. South Korea

Hi again, I asked for flag change for South Korea almost a year ago. here ,I want to ask for that again, I'm not necessarily supporting these changes but if this template and this should be similar. the current situation uses Flag of South Korea (1984-1997).svg for 1950-1997 which is obviously wrong based on the file name. ANT code is ambiguous

For Antigua and Barbuda, the IOC code is ANT, but the ISO code is ATG.

For Netherlands Antilles, the IOC code is AHO, but the ISO code (and the FIFA code) is ANT.

Template:Country data ANT redirects to Netherlands Antilles.

This module lists ANT as Antigua and Barbuda, which is its IOC code.

There is a list of differences between IOC, ISO, and FIFA at List of FIFA country codes#FIFA, IOC and ISO differences. There may be other overlaps; I haven't looked.

Follow-up: according to the table on the FIFA page, ANT is the only code that overlaps between two different countries. Depends on the intended usage. This template was designed for use in sports competitions, so the ISO code was never taken into consideration. If it's just FIFA that's different, I can code in the backend so it puts in the proper country if/when that usage is used. I don't think it's "wrong" necessarily - I think '73 and '75 fell in that period where Taiwan was still competing under that name (before PRC threw their hissy fit) - but that page also uses {{flagcountry}} which doesn't call this template. there are no articles about Taiwan at the XYZ games (other than the TPE pages) so as of yet I don't see a need to include them. A suggest from tr wiki

Hi, I recenty implemented this module into Turkish Wikipedia, and I saw that some countries are written two times on the main countries table. I workaround s solution about this problem. Can't we change this line:

with this:

Thanks, that's a good idea. It would be slightly more efficient to have a separates aliases table and the comment block near the top starting "The following names occur twice..." might be converted to a table. On the other hand, it is convenient to have all the country codes in one table.

SWZ

@Primefac: I forget how all this is supposed to work but a couple of articles have an error due to the recent edit for SWZ. For example, 1976 Summer Olympics shows

Lua error in Module:Country_alias at line 1791: Invalid country alias: Expression error: Unexpected < operator

due to use of {{flagIOC|SWZ}}. {{FlagIOC}} passes " Olympics" to {{FlagIOC2}} as parameter 2 and that sets fullName. Then an expression error occurs, I think because the String match would give an empty string so the expression would be "<2018". That's as far as I can take it at the moment. @Primefac: I have nearly finished preparing some code for the module to replace the logic in the template. I will put it in the sandbox soon. However, I would like something clarified first. My reading of the template is that if fullName is given then year and games are set from fullName. If fullName is "2012 Competition" then year = 2012 and games = Competition. That's fine. But if fullName is "Competition" then year is assumed to be an empty string (will not equal any year) or zero (will be less than any year). Any value in the year parameter would be ignored. Is that what is wanted, or was it too painful to say something like "use year from fullName if fullName is given and starts with a number; otherwise use year parameter if given; otherwise use empty string/zero"? If |fullName= is given, then it would be assumed that |year= would not also be used, because why give both? In other words, if fullName is given, it's assumed that the year (if there is one) will come from that and return a null string if |fullName=Competition. I put that idea into the sandbox. Time expired

Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics is in Category:Pages with script errors with a zillion "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" errors. That occurs because {{country alias}} is called 3912 times! I'm not sure that encouraging such bloat is desirable but I'm not going to fix that so I'm wondering whether changing Module:Country alias to cope with the fact that it can be called thousands of times would be desirable. The technical solution would be to move the large tables from that module to a new Module:Country alias/data and access it with mw.loadData which would greatly speed up the module when called a thousand times on a page. @Primefac: What do you think? There were no visible differences except that I got lucky and the page saved without any errors. I was irritated to see that Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics still uses a lot of Lua time, even after moving the data to a separate module. Investigation shows these results for that article:

Each call to {{country alias}} invokes Module:Country alias so the module is invoked 1023*3 + 33*3 + 200*2 = 3568 times in Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics. That takes about 6.5 seconds of Lua time which is 1.8 ms/call. If a better fix were wanted, it would involve changing the way the templates work. For example, {{flagIOC}} calls {{flagIOC2}} and the latter calls {{country alias}} three times. The fix would be to have the former invoke a new function in the module to do the equivalent of flagIOC2 in a single call. That would reduce the number of calls to the module from 3568 to 1256 which should reduce the Lua time by about the same factor. Johnuniq (talk) 04:20, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Every few months I come back to the flagXYZ templates and attempt to tweak them a little bit to be more effective and/or condense them. Now that you mention it, it is rather silly to call a wrapper that calls a big module three times. Even if it's simple, it definitely would make more sense to make a single call to {{country alias}}. At Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Template:FlagIOC dropped from occupying 57% of the transclusion expansion time to 13%, and the Lua time usage dropped from 9.4 seconds to 3.9. Hi again, I don't know if I asked this before. but I wonder if that's technically possible to have a different name for NOC code for different competitions ? if that's possible the ART code should return just the "Refugee Team" and not  Refugee Team for the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. that's the official term they used for the competition. even the article is Refugee Team at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. that's no big deal if this is not possible technically because a redirect already solved this but I thought that should be better. thanks in advance. Nick.mon, I don't think you're correct in saying it's "absolutely wrong", because both images (File:Flag of Italy (Pantone, 2003).svg and File:Flag of Italy (2003–2006).svg) say that they're using the same pantone. Primefac I sincerly don't know why this version has been used for such a long time. However, the "correct" Pantone colors are listed even in the file's description, but you can easily search on Google and discover that they're completely different from the ones used in the file (Pantone 18-5642TC, Pantone 11-4201TC and Pantone 18-1660TC). The picture currently shown at Flag of Italy is obviously wrong. This not this.

The colours first specified, which looks like it was 18 September 2002, then made official 17 January 2003 (?), are shown here (Pantone textile 18-5642TC (green), Pantone textile 11-4201TC (white), Pantone textile 18-1660TC (red)).

Then after the controversy the colours were changed slightly, which looks like is was 2 June 2004, then made official April 14, 2006 (?), are shown here (Pantone textile 17-6153 TCX (green), Pantone textile 11-0601 TCX (white), Pantone textile 18-1662 TCX (red)).

Summary

What's interesting is that although the pantone version is official, it seems that the original brighter shades continue to be used primarily [5] not [6] here and on it.wiki. So another question besides fixing the 2002-2004 (or 2003-2006 depending on when it was official?) flag icon colours, is whether we should add an icon for the flag from 2004 onward (or 2006 onward) to the last pantone specifications or keep it with the brighter colours? Ok, as always in Italy we do things much more complicated than they should be. So, which is the correct version, used from 2003 to 2006? Having read through most of the discussions at commons:File talk:Flag_of_Italy.svg, it seems like there has always been some concern with converting between Pantone and RGB. I noticed we are using the 1988-2004 flag for Lithuania for 2004 Olympics which can be wrong, per Flag of Lithuania, they changed the flag on July 2004, one month before the Olympics. so unless there is a source indicate they still used the old flag, I think we should make a change. change this code {2004, "Flag of Lithuania (1988-2004).svg"} to {2003, "Flag of Lithuania (1988-2004).svg"} or simply make the 2004 Olympics an exception which is probably a better idea. again I have to intervene here. I suggest more researches should be done before making the change, I know there is something about a different flag from 2004-2013 in Flag of Afghanistan article. but there is a picture in the same page exactly against that. take a look at this one the picture is taken in 2010 and the flag in the pic looks exactly the same as the current flag, not that suggested 2004-2013 flag which made me believe they didn't officially change the flag. they just used that other flag (with different logo size) sometimes. This is very interesting, I also took my time to check all the opening ceremonies in the previous Asian Games.

2010 AG bigger seal but not as big as the supposed "current flag"

2014 AG still the smaller one, remember they were supossed to have a new flag from 2013 !

if you ask me, Afghanistan never changed its flag but they just never standardized it, so different flag were used in different events (sport events or not) so I'm not sure if making those 3 Olympics as exception for the smaller flag is a good idea. apparently they are still using that flag mostly. so my suggestion is or to just leave it with the "current flag" or use that "old flag" for all the competitions (even until 2021). even though obviously there is no perfect solution. beside that I understand the official language of this country, I also checked their local sources and never found a source about changing the flag recently. The name change of "Swaziland" (SWZ) to "Eswatini" (SWZ) has now become official in everything in which the country competes (i.e. the Olympics, etc.). However, unlike "Macedonia" (MKD) → "North Macedonia" (MKD), it has not been fully implemented in Module:Country alias. For example, on the All-time Olympic Games medal table page, typing "{{flagIOCteam|SWZ}}" leaves the country name out of date, but typing "{{flagIOCteam|SWZ_YO2018}}" makes the country code (which is visible on the page) appear as "(SWZ_YO2018)" instead of "(SWZ)" visibly.

Thus, on Module:Country alias, this:

After a fairly fuzzy search I found the following pages that call this module via the various {{flagIOC}}-type templates without a year or other designation that would help narrow down "Swaziland or Eswatini":

• List of participating nations at the Winter Youth Olympic Games: has never competed, so SWZ should probably show Eswatini.
• List of participating nations at the Summer Youth Olympic Games: should be Eswatini
• 2018–2020 CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup: not sure which it should be, as the competition started in 2018 and ended in 2020, but I think SWZ didn't play until it was Eswatini (based on the references). That being said, it is an Olympic qualifier, so the use of {{flagIOC}} is appropriate here.
• 2008 African Weightlifting Championships: incorrect use of {{flagIOC}} so somewhat of a moot point but I thought I would mention it (should be Swaziland for the record)
• List of CGF country codes: listed at [16] as Eswatini, so should show that
• List of IOC country codes: uses {{flagicon}} to show Eswatini, but breaks the {{flagIOC}} pattern for all other countries (i.e. should show Eswatini)
• List of participating nations at the Winter Olympic Games: should be Swaziland (in my opinion) as Eswatini has not competed under that name in the Winter Olympics, but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise
• 1976 Summer Olympics: shows properly as Swaziland (via the redirect)
• 1980 Summer Olympics boycott: shows properly as Swaziland via the redirect

Now, with all that being said, and the fact that the 1980 list has a whole host of "hacked" outputs (e.g. Bahrain, Bermuda, Paraguay, etc), I do suppose that the two outstanding "Swaziland" instances in '76 and '80 can just be changed in a similar fashion, as well as the Winter Olympics usage.
