Côte d'Ivoire vs Cote d'Ivoire

when using flagicon appears "Cote d'Ivoire" but it should be "Côte d'Ivoire". Can someone correct this? Zdtrlik (talk) 18:23, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Can someone please adjust this template with the following to reflect the new title used in rugby articles :

This template's current name and display of "Côte d'Ivoire" are inappropriate in the wake of the parent's article's move to Ivory Coast.

• Template:Country data Ivory Coast (redirect) and Template:Country data Côte d'Ivoire (current name) should be switched to reflect this change; and
• All instances of the template should display Ivory Coast as the country name

While it might be helpful to allow display of either name depending on context, the inconsistency could create confusion; either way, "Ivory Coast" should be default as long as it's the name of the main article. --BDD (talk) 18:26, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Partly done: The template has been moved, and uses (such as {{flagcountry}}) that use the default name will use Ivory Coast rather than Côte d'Ivoire. But uses that use the name of whichever redirect was used, such as {{flag|Côte d'Ivoire}}, will still use Côte d'Ivoire; these will need to be fixed manually. When doing so, please do be careful that you do not change the display in articles on topics where Côte d'Ivoire is the correct/common use, e.g. the articles about ISO 3166, FIFA football/soccer, or the Olympics. I have reverted these changes. I had fixed this template on July 18, and there was no need for additional changes. Note that there are many instances where this template is used to link to national sports teams, and these are still named using Côte d'Ivoire:

• {{fb|CIV}} → Ivory Coast
• {{bk|CIV}} → Ivory Coast
• {{hb|CIV}} → Ivory Coast
• {{ru|CIV}} → Ivory Coast

Note that only the rugby union team uses "Ivory Coast", and this is handled explicitely within the template. But the other articles rely on the shortname alias parameter within this template being set to "Côte d'Ivoire".

Note also that editors have already been using both {{flag|Côte d'Ivoire}} and {{flag|Ivory Coast}}. Moving this template would have no effect on those instances. The only way to change this is by editing the individual articles themselves. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 04:53, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

So instead of adding appropriate |link alias-football= parameters, you revert everything to keep the template at a different name than its corresponding article? Whatever. Adding all the sport-specific parameters wouldn't solve everything. Transclusions of this template using {{Infobox bilateral relations}} (such as Côte d'Ivoire–Russia relations) would need to be updated—including renaming images such as File:Côte d'Ivoire Russia Locator.svg, for example. But I have to ask, what problem needs to be fixed here? Is there something "wrong" with the current template name? So you believe it's better to have the title of this template reflect the country's name in some sports, rather than the consensus name from the main article? I was going to sarcastically suggest Template:Country data Taiwan should be at Template:Country data Chinese Taipei and was surprised to see they're separate templates. What difference does it make? Already, {{flag|Ivory Coast}} produces the result you want, and {{fb|CIV}} also produces the correct result for the football articles. As for your Taiwan/Chinese Taipei example, I'll also add that Template:Country data Myanmar and Template:Country data Burma are both also used. It's awkward when a country has two different names for different usage instances within Wikipedia, but these templates can accomodate that. Again, I ask what problem are you trying to solve? Which articles are currently broken, that changing this template would fix? I think you're getting hung up on the "title of this template". Don't look at it that way; it's not used by itself. The name is not a title, it's a parameter to other templates, such as {{flag}}, {{flagicon}}, {{fb}}, etc. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
