old flags[edit]

Is there a technical reason that so many Libyan flags are missing from this template, or is it just that no one has done the work? (I don't know what's involved in fixing this.) Quale (talk) 22:01, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Egypt 72[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Egypt_1972.svg this flag is not on the page —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.19.23.10 (talk) 16:14, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

that's an Egyptian flag. This is the Libyan page. Ansh666 (talk) 03:49, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV concern[edit]

Since international recognition is split between a government using the green flag and a government using the tricolor, shouldn't the flag be scrubbed and replaced with a blank template? -Kudzu1 (talk) 06:52, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is 2 flags that control Libya, so shouldn't there be a change in the flag? Thanks, Steve T. R.! --SomeDudeWithAUserName (talk with me!) 22:49, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can use {{flagicon|Libya|1951}} vs. {{flagicon|Libya|1977}} to specify which flag you want to show. Before the conflict is over and Libya has a new single and undisputed flag, there is no call to make any change to the output of the default call of {{flagicon|Libya}}, as this is going to break countless instances in articles created before 2011.

Once the flag does change, all instances of {{flagicon|Libya}} will need to be replaced by {{flagicon|Libya|1977}} before such a change can be implemented. --dab (𒁳) 12:03, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wish to nominate File:Flag of Libya (2011 combined).svg for inclusion (e.g. as variant "2011", "2011 dispute", or something along these lines). --NetRolller 3D 03:10, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: I would accept the switch "2011-joint". If the Rebels win, the 1951 can be the default. --Marianian(talk) 01:28, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See above. By essentially calling Gaddafi's flag "Flag of Libya", we are recognizing the Gaddafi regime - a serious NPOV issue. Instead, the combined flag should be used for {{flagicon|Libya}}, with the Gaddafi flag reachable using {{flagicon|Libya|1977}}, and the NTC flag at {{flagicon|Libya|1951|}}. --NetRolller 3D 20:14, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd prefer the use of a blank template as the combined flag seems like WP:ORIGINAL to me. But I definitely agree using the green flag is a major violation of WP:NPOV and it must be changed. -Kudzu1 (talk) 00:04, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A blank template is a bad idea - it may work for {{flag|Libya}}, but not for {{flagicon|Libya}}, which will simply produce nothing, as if it were a bug. Either a combined flag is needed, or both flags should be shown side-by-side (however, this raises problems with space constraints). Also, at least one news outlet (can't remember which one) uses a diagonally-cut flag like the one I proposed - though I'm not sure if it has Gaddafi's or the NTC's flag on the left.--NetRolller 3D 01:26, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We don't take sides in arguments like this. The flag is what it is at this time. The same that international organizations as the Olympic committee and similar bodies probably also still recognize. Wikipedia describes what is the status quo, and calling that a "serious npov" issue is misunderstanding how Wikipedia works. We do not pick sides, we describe and document them. When a flag has changed, we will change it, no sooner no later, per no crystal ball. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:26, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
International recognition is divided between the two governments. By displaying Gaddafi's flag exclusively, we are taking sides. The status quo is that *some* international organizations use one flag, and *some* use the other one - this is not what Wikipedia is describing at the moment. Saying that "internal recognition is still exclusively with Gaddafi" is a huge stretch. Even a blank flag would be better. --NetRolller 3D 18:27, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: I have disabled the request as there is not yet a consensus on which version is appropriate. Dbachmann seems to have the right idea about how to achieve the change without breaking uses unintentionally. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:30, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for new switch[edit]

I propose that {{flag|Libya|2011}} should return  Libya. The purpose is for country foreign relations articles which have sole recognition of the NTC. --Marianian(talk) 15:10, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The 1951 and 2011 entities are different even if the flag is the same. -Kudzu1 (talk) 19:50, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can an administrator please update this template already? -Kudzu1 (talk) 18:43, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I independently came to a similar conclusion, but went with a less invasive edit because there hasn't been a lot of input here lately. Discuss :) --Joy [shallot] (talk) 15:29, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
BTW a compromise seems best even for those BL articles because by and large they all previously described relations with the Gaddafi regime. In any case, hopefully this issue is rendered moot soon... --Joy [shallot] (talk) 15:32, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with the split flag is that it doesn't make any sense for most articles. When it's just referring to the country, it works, but when it refers to a government or a person affiliated with a government, it's best to just use the flag they're under. It's also problematic that {{flag|Libyan Arab Jamahiriya}} returns the split flag, as the folks with the tricolor want nothing to do with any "jamahiriya". -Kudzu1 (talk) 15:37, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This template is transcluded on thousands of pages, for many more instances than just foreign relations articles. The "split flag" (File:Flag of Libya (2011 combined).svg) violates WP:Manual of Style (icons), namely "Do not distort icons". — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:05, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. And that point was made in the discussion above. WP:BOLD and all that, but this doesn't seem like the best solution and it should have been discussed prior to implementation, considering that this is a protected template and most of us can't edit it. -Kudzu1 (talk) 17:11, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, I shall add the |1977 variant to transclusion instances that clearly are date-dependent (e.g. football results for the Libyan national team from 1977–2011). That will minimize the number of pages that will be inadvertently changed when the File:Flag of Libya.svg image inevitably changes on Commons. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:19, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I just finished doing that for all of the MILHIST articles. -Kudzu1 (talk) 17:22, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so to get '2011' to work, we need to add that alias to this template, and to get Jamahirya to work, we need to fork it (it's now a plain redirect)? --Joy [shallot] (talk) 17:31, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really know the technical aspects of template code, but yes, that sounds right. -Kudzu1 (talk) 17:37, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As I have pointed out numerous times, on Commons, The File:Flag of Libya.svg image can only change on Commons after all instances of transclusion of this image have been removed. This concerns thousands of pages across all wikis. People will need to use bots to do this. You can't just change icons transcluded in so many time-dependent articles. People who want to change the image carry the burden of first using bots to remove all use of the image, across all wikis. --dab (𒁳) 12:15, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That task was finished for en.wiki weeks ago. Check my edit history. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:11, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Naval ensign[edit]

The naval ensign show obviously dates from 1977. Not sure that it will continue to be in use once Gadaffi is finally eliminated. What flags did the Libyan Navy use before 1977? Anyone got any idea, as it seems that further naval variants may be required. Mjroots (talk) 14:26, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So far, they seem to just be using the same tricolor flag on ships. -Kudzu1 (talk) 14:54, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are only 14 pages that rely on the naval variant of this template, almost all to refer to the "current" Libyan Navy and it's ships. Possibly some of these could be updated to use the {{navy|Libyan Arab Jamahiriya}} if appropriate. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:59, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If they are using the tricolour now then either a {{Navy|Libya|2011}} needs to be created, so that it displays Libya Libyan Navy or the Navy template needs a 1977 version to display the green and blue flag. Still the pre-1977 question to consider though. Mjroots (talk) 05:59, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mjroots, before doing this edit, I trust you have checked that no pages were left that linked to {{flag|LBY}}? Andrwsc said he would go after these (comment of 17:19, 29 August 2011, above). Have you checked positively that this has been completed before you made the change? --dab (𒁳) 12:17, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

oh ffs, I just notice you have done no such thing. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of 1992 now displays the rebel flag. This was just a random page I checked. Why would you do such a thing after you had been explicitly warned of the implications? Please, first remove all use of the template, and then change the default image. As long as this hasn't been done, it doesn't cost anything just to specify the "2011" where desired. --dab (𒁳) 12:23, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The list of UNFCCC members refers to contemporary nations, not just as they were as when the treaty was opened (or when Libya actually signed it). For example, the flag of Malawi was also different in 1992. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:51, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that too. Ditto Iraq. -Kudzu1 (talk) 16:53, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Current flag[edit]

I don't understand the point of the "2011" variant. There are two situations where flag templates are used:

  • for articles describing a "moment in time", and
  • for articles that refer to the current country.

For example, List of country calling codes uses {{flag|Libya}} but 2007 All-Africa Games uses {{flag|Libya|1977}}. What is the point of editing thousands of articles to change {{flag|Libya}} (or it's equivalent shortcuts of {{LBY}} and {{LBA}} to use a "2011" variant? What does that accomplish? Basically, there are three choices for the "current" flag:

  1. 1951 variant
  2. 1977 variant
  3. nothing (i.e. use File:Flag placeholder.svg)

But for each of those cases, we only need to make a single edit (to this template), not make edits to hundreds/thousands of other articles. Therefore, we need consensus here on the flag alias parameter, and that's it.

By the way, I have already gone through all 3000+ articles that use this template and verified that the correct variant is used (or no variant, for "current" usage), so the only work that remains to be done is to choose the current flag image here. File:Flag of Libya.svg has effectively been orphaned from en.wiki, with only 5 articles that still use it (pending cache updates). — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:47, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's time to replace that file with the 1951 version, then. That's clearly the de jure flag of Libya with the most recognition. -Kudzu1 (talk) 16:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's a change that would have to be made on Commons, not here. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:56, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request from Gugganij, 27 September 2011[edit]

In the flag variant section the flag of 1977 (File:Flag of the Libyan Jamahiriya 1977.svg) was deleted, please replace dead wikilink with File:Flag of Libya (1977).svg. Suggested change is uncontroversial.

Gugganij (talk) 21:33, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 2013[edit]

Please replace File:Flag of Libya (1977).svg with File:Flag of Libya (1977-2011).svg. File was renamed. Please replace File:Flag of Libyan Arab Republic 1969.svg with File:Flag of Libya (1969–1972).svg, as the file was also renamed on Commons. Please also create a parameter for the former naval ensign File:Naval ensign of Libya 1977-2011.svg.

I'm sorry, but it's still missing the old naval ensign. Fry1989 eh? 20:41, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The old naval ensign is included in Template:Country data Libyan Arab JamahiriyaAndrwsc (talk · contribs) 02:27, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2014: current flag[edit]

Hi everyone,

Forgive me my naiveté, but why does this template currently show the all green flag while it seems that the red-black-green-with-white-crescent-and-star is the flag currently in use in Libya? - FakirNL (talk) 07:53, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was at Wikimedia Commons were someone reverted Commons:File:Flag of Libya.svg to the old flag. It is solved now. - FakirNL (talk) 12:44, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 9 January 2019[edit]

Remove:
flag alias-2004 = Flag of Libya (WFB 2004).gif
flag alias-2011 = Flag of Libya (WFB 2011).gif
flag alias-2013 = Flag of Libya (WFB 2013).gif
and
var8 = 2004
var9 = 2011
var10 = 2013
Remove these flags as they are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factbook (you can see if you open the flag image) and not are official or even real changes to the flag used by Libya, they should not be included and especially not linked to a specific year. This will not break anything as the pages using these aliases will revert to Libya default flag, which these are (incorrect) variations of. The one that isnt of the current Libyan flag have been ensured to be unused as to not cause problems as it is in a another template which will auto-adjust based on the year.
