Remove:
flag alias-1937 = Flag of Ireland (WFB 2000).png
flag alias-2004 = Flag of Ireland (WFB 2004).gif
var2 = 1937
var3 = 2004
These lines will remove flags are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factbook (you can see if you open the flag image) and not are official or even real changes to the flag used by Ireland, they should not be included and especially not linked to a specific year It will not produce errors from missing flags by pages that use this, as none do

Please add | name alias-netball = Republic of Ireland and | link alias-netball = Republic of Ireland national netball team. The article is called "Republic of Ireland national netball team", but {{nb}} links to "Ireland national netball team" (Republic of Ireland). Please add | name alias-beachsoccer = Republic of Ireland and | link alias-beachsoccer = Republic of Ireland national beach soccer team, and | name alias-futsal = Republic of Ireland and | link alias-futsal = Republic of Ireland national futsal team. Articles for both beach soccer and futsal begin with "Republic of Ireland", and that's the name FIFA uses, just like for football. However, I'm not sure if it should be "beachsoccer" or "beach soccer" before "=". DenSportgladeSkåningen (talk) 14:18, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

No, this template is for the sovereign nation, the other is for all Island organisations. I've added a talk page discussion there to remove direct mention of the Republic to prevent confusion.Spike 'em (talk) 10:16, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

I was a bit hasty in my assessment, as I was just looking at the sports team usage. It remains the case that there are some different uses of the 2 templates which just redirecting will cause problems for (e.g. the difference between Republic of Ireland and Ireland). More discussion/planning is needed before any changes are made. Spike 'em (talk) 12:56, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

I don't think so, there are already sports teams linking to that template. If you have a look on the CD Ireland template documentation it says that Other information : This template is intended to be used for all-Ireland instances, usually resulting in a wikilink to Ireland (article about the island) instead of Republic of Ireland (article about the sovereign nation). However, it is often convenient to use {{flagicon|Ireland}} and {{flag|Ireland}} instead of {{flagicon|Republic of Ireland}} and {{flag|Republic of Ireland}} respectively, so this template differs from the standard format in order to accommodate that usage So it seems quite deliberate that they are separate templates. I think all that might be needed are carefully scripted {{Distinguish}} hatnotes to clarify the important differences and to ensure that other editors won't get trapped in another edit → revert sequence like we did. To keep things in one place: I've reverted change to Template:Country data Ireland, as it gave inconsistent flag / country links. If it does show the RoI flag, then any links should be to that article, rather than the "whole island" one. Spike 'em (talk) 09:55, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

To editor Spike 'em: "things" are actually in two places, the RoI link is used both in this template and in the Country data RoI template. So there is no link to Ireland here, all the links are to the Republic of Ireland in both this template and in the Country data RoI template. It seems if anything this template should have the link to Ireland first, and then perhaps a variant link to the RoI article. Seems very odd that the Republic of Ireland, which has its own Country data template, would be linked also in this template first over Ireland. Don't understand that. I get confused whenever I look at it, as it is different to how I thought I remembered it each time! However, it does seem deliberate that in plain usage that {{flag|Ireland}} should show both the flag of the Republic and link to it (as a shortcut to using the full {{flag|Republic of Ireland}}. Only if a varient is used should it link to the Island. One thing I'm not sure on is the use of the TLAs of IRE and EIR. I think I'm getting confused by the {{fb}} links above, which do show the previous / whole island varients, but used in {{flag}} show the tricolour. The ISO code for the country is IRL, so would need some delving into the detail of why IRE / EIR show what they do. Spike 'em (talk) 11:39, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

To editor Spike 'em: well, okay, I get confused too by some of these CD templates, like for example why have both navy and naval? and why are they sometimes the same flag and link aliases and sometimes different? and so on. Ireland is certainly a special case and there may be a lot of overlapping with the RoI, so good luck trying to get it straightened out, and let me know if you need me for anything.
