Date the DNZB article was last updated[edit]

The template does not include a parameter for the date the DNZB article was last updated. Is this not important? Nurg (talk) 01:14, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't that what the "accessdate" is for? Stuartyeates (talk) 10:33, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, accessdate is the date the Wikipedia editor retrieved the page. Nurg (talk) 09:57, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, 'accessdate' takes care of 'updated' in so far that you can see which of those dates is newer. Most of the time, 'accessdate' would be newer, and thus there is no point in recording more than one date. I for one use this template a lot and I like it for its simplicity, so I wouldn't appreciate if another parameter had to be entered. Schwede66 19:04, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Authorlink[edit]

Could somebody who knows their way around templates please add an optional parameter for authorlink parameter? Schwede66 21:24, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the code it appears to already be there. Try the seventh and/or eighth numbered arguements. You may have to play around. If you get a working one, I'll update the documentation based on that. Stuartyeates (talk) 22:00, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Aha. This example produces an authorlink: {{DNZB|McIntyre |W. David |1F9 |FitzGerald, James Edward 1818–1896|15 September 2012||W. David McIntyre}} Thank you, sir. Schwede66 03:10, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've added that example to the main template documentation. Stuartyeates (talk) 10:51, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All parameters are optional?[edit]

I have edited the doc, but have left "All parameters are optional." What does this mean? Some parameters are optional, but if the id is omitted, the link does not go to the DNZB article.

Also "title defaults to PAGENAME" is hardly satisfactory, because DNZB titles are surname first, and WP titles are surname last. I'm not suggesting we change the code, but surely we shouldn't suggest that editors may omit the title.

Am I overlooking something? Nurg (talk) 08:01, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

URL changes[edit]

It would appear that the DNZB people have changed the URLs for the bios. Previously, it worked just having a person's ID number. It appears that now, you also need the person's name as part of the URL, meaning that the template is broken. Stuartyeates, you are closer to the action - could you please have a word with them and discuss what they can do about it? Schwede66 06:54, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've sent an email asking what's going on. If there's not a response shortly, we should redirect all URLs into the arvhive.org copies of these articles. They should all have been harvested into there. Stuartyeates (talk) 19:49, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Update for Stuartyeates, as I've figured something out. "1V4" is the ID for Julius Vogel, and that doesn't work. The same ID with a lower case letter, i.e. "1v4", does work, though. Schwede66 10:21, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I tested an upper case URL and that's now working again. Great! Thanks for your support. Schwede66 05:48, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unnamed parameters[edit]

I propose to add names to all instances of this template in mainspace that do not have them yet. It makes them much easier to read if you are not familiar with the template. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 21:31, 23 April 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Rich Farmbrough, it seems like you've done it already. My watchlist is in overdrive. Schwede66 22:04, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite! I did it for those with an invalid accessdate, and a few dozen more. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 06:38, 24 April 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 30 December 2018[edit]

Can anyone please add date format? Thanks!

Should we use via = Te Ara?[edit]

Hi, just a thought, as I've recently been editing Dunedin (ship) to use Papers Past, and I had used cite encyclopedia for the DNZB entry until I discovered this template. I had added via = Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand as per their "How to cite this page" footnote. I wonder if we should amend this template to do that?—Jon (talk) 02:32, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Update teara link for privacy etc.[edit]

I think the 'http://www.teara.govt.nz/' part of the links in the template should be updated to 'https://teara.govt.nz/'. Nurg (talk) 07:54, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. Done. Schwede66 08:15, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. You changed to https. What about removing the "www."? It's not a big deal but will avoid one redirect and, who knows, one day they might suddenly remove the redirect and break the links. Nurg (talk) 09:45, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Second time lucky? Schwede66 10:06, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks. Nurg (talk) 07:25, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Recently added biographies[edit]

The citation short-cut only works for biographies published before November 2017 as these earlier redirects had already been set up at the Te Ara end (when we changed from dnzb.govt.nz).

As of writing there have been 63 biographies published since that date - all of these starts with a '6' for the id (virtual volume six). Eg https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/6s1/sturm-jacqueline-cecilia . I'm not sure what the best long-term solution to this is, but in the meantime if you see the original publication date is after 2017 you will need to add the citation manually.

The original publication date is recorded in the beige box at the top left of the biography body.

Jamie Mackay (talk) 02:09, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jamie Mackay: Ah, I see. There's me emailing you what somebody has just figured out and I see it was you who posted this info in the first instance. Before we do anything complex at the Wikipedia end, may I ask how hard it is to set up those 63 redirects at your end? That obviously depends on your platform but what we use at work (Drupal), there wouldn't be many things simpler in life than to define a URL redirect.
Relying on a manual fix at the WP end wouldn't be elegant because there are literally dozens of editors using the DNZB template. It's much better to work something out where things just keep working as per the template's intent. If there's work involved at your end, could I perhaps help somehow? Schwede66 08:31, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We should be able to do this but needs a bit of testing. Assuming it works, we will build adding redirects into our processes for any new biographies added from now on. Jamie Mackay (talk) 03:24, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok this is all fixed - the new biographies should now all redirect using the template. Jamie Mackay (talk) 21:25, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tweak parameters[edit]

I think we should update the template to more closely match how the DNZB itself suggests, as per the following formatting to cite (for example) Kelly Tarlton. The shortest route would be to append " - Biography" to title, and use the via = Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand parameter (or change the publisher parameter) since the dictionary is now part of Te Ara. Alternatively, is it feasible to scrape and somehow cache the HTML DC tags from the URL and populate author, publication date and so on that way, with some sort of magic Lua script? — Jon (talk) 02:50, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lynette Townsend and Sarah Burgess. 'Tarlton, Kelvin Ewart (Kelly) - Biography', Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, first published in 2020, updated September, 2020. Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/6t10/tarlton-kelvin-ewart (accessed 11 November 2020)
