I recently created the article on E-Theses Online Service (and its redirect EThOS) and this template for citations. Now I'm trying to add the following in citations:

<ref name=hawkingphd>{{cite thesis |degree=PhD |first=Stephen William |last=Hawking |title=Properties of Expanding Universes |publisher=University of Cambridge |year=1966 |url=https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/251038 |authorlink=Stephen Hawking |OCLC=62793673|doi=10.17863/CAM.11283|EThOS=uk.bl.ethos.601153}} {{open access}}</ref>

So that I can cite, e.g. Stephen Hawkings thesis[1] etc. As of 2017, that creates the text "Unknown parameter |EThOS= ignored"

I've clearly done something wrong but I'm struggling to debug it, can anyone help @Andrew Davidson: Duncan.Hull (talk) 22:03, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Duncan.Hull: The immediate problem seems to be that {{cite thesis}} doesn't have EThOS as a parameter and so rejects your attempt to use it. I'm not familiar with these templates and don't have time to trace them further today. There's an event at the BL on Friday with a good crowd of Wikipedians attending so I'll give it some more thought then. In the meantime, let's try pinging Mike who is another Mancunian who does more template editing than me. Andrew D. (talk) 10:13, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Duncan.Hull and Andrew Davidson: I suggest raising this for discussion at Help talk:Citation Style 1 if you want the parameter adding to cite thesis - which should be straightforward, but there needs to be some demonstrated consensus for it. Otherwise, try using the id parameter, e.g. Hawking, Stephen William (1966). Properties of Expanding Universes (PhD thesis). University of Cambridge. doi:10.17863/CAM.11283. OCLC 62793673. EThOS uk.bl.ethos.601153. Open access icon Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:54, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
