Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia talk:Reference desk|answered The page notice needs to acknowledge the fact that some of the desks are regularly protected from editing by IPs and new accounts, so the wording should allow the making of edit requests to ask questions, instead of sending people back Please enter below exactly what you want this change to, just as if you were editing the page your self. If you are looking to get community involvement on new wording, please post at Wikipedia talk:Reference desk and gain consensus first.

I suggest "Please do not ask knowledge questions on this page, except when unable to edit the reference desk owing to page protection. This talk page is where the reference desk itself is discussed. To choose an appropriate reference desk to visit, click here." DuncanHill (talk) 23:06, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. Ahecht (TALK

@Ahecht: It was turned down for not having a specific suggestion, so I make a specific suggestion. Then it gets turned down saying I need to establish a consensus. Could you save us all time by letting me know the next hoop I'll have to jump through once I've done that? DuncanHill (talk) 08:41, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@DuncanHill: Sorry for the mixed messages. On a widely trafficked page such as the Reference Desk, where there are many volunteers working, it's always good practice to get a consensus of the regulars on that page before making major changes like this (and this is a major change, since the page currently says "This page is for discussion of the Reference Desks only", which implies that it is not to be used for asking questions). The last time a proposal was made about changing something on the reference desk, there were 20 participants, so making this change unilaterally doesn't make sense. Xaosflux may not have realized this. --Ahecht (TALK

I would support removing the message altogether - I can't imagine that anyone actually reads it, and we can deal manually with questions accidentally posted to the Talk page if any arise. In default of that, I would support DuncanHill's proposed change to the wording. Tevildo (talk) 09:16, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Seconded. SemanticMantis (talk) 17:26, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
