Template talk:En dash

Template:En dash is permanently protected from editing because it is a heavily used or highly visible template. Substantial changes should first be proposed and discussed here on this page. If the proposal is uncontroversial or has been discussed and is supported by consensus, editors may use {{edit template-protected}} to notify an administrator or template editor to make the requested edit. Usually, any contributor may edit the template's documentation to add usage notes or categories.

Problems[edit]

If you look at the hundreds of pages that use this template, it is clear that almost none of them use it correctly. Some uses could be automatically fixed, like where it's surrounded by spaces could be replaced by spaced ndash, removing the first space. And where it has a space only on the right, it can just be replaced by spaced ndash. Also, when it's used without any spaces, it can be replaced by a literal ndash character, so then there will remain only a moderate set to review. It looks like the bot messed things up, too, by putting the spaced ndash template in the lead section of articles. Templates don't show up in tooltip previews, so it results in strange-looking text with missing punctuation in this instance, all of which will need to be manually corrected. — Quicksilver^{T @} 16:34, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(a) Two guys talking to each other on a template talk page are not reasonable amount of consensus for a template being removed (badly) from 2k-3k pages.

(b) I know the pages I'm using it for are fine and they make up most of the first page of links; so what is it you two think the problem is? —

"Banshee" in the TV section currently links to "bansee" the thing. It should actually link to "banshee (TV series)" ie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banshee_(TV_series)

- @Philg88: A redirect would remain in place, so I don't see what difference it makes to any of the many editors, or what the significance of it being used in thousands of articles is.
