If the Lexington Branch wasn't considered part of the Fitchburg Line (despite the latter being the line that it branched off from), then what line was it considered part of during the time it was in MBTA service? Whoop whoop pull upBitching Betty | Averted crashes 14:27, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It was simply considered its own line that shared the initial segment of the track, just as the Needham, Franklin, and Providence/Stoughton lines are considered separately despite sharing several miles of the Southwest Corridor. If anything, it's actually historically closer to the Lowell Line - after 1869 it was owned by the Boston & Lowell, and from 1870 to 1927 it ran via the Lowell Line and what would later be the Fitchburg Cutoff and not via the Fitchburg.
Of the other branch lines cut in the MBTA era: the Central Mass was also considered an independent line, West Medway and Dedham were largely separate but may have appeared on Needham and Franklin timetables, and only the Woburn Branch was considered an integral part of its parent line.
