Template conversion[edit]

This obsolete template is being converted to fit better with the current WikiProject Flag Template. (SEWilco 19:29, 1 August 2005 (UTC))[reply]

This template is now again in regular use (not obsolete). --Ligulem 23:07, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Issues with Flag of Mexico[edit]

I've seen several pages utilizing flagcountry|Mexico in a template and the image not parsing. Any ideas why? // 3R1C 15:25, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

fix for alt tags in flag images[edit]

Would it be possible to change the code to be as follows:

[[Image:{{ #if: {{{variant|}}} | {{{flag alias-{{{variant}}}}}} | {{{flag alias}}} }}|{{ #if: {{{size|}}} | {{{size}}} | 22x20px }}|border|Flag of {{{flag name alias|{{{alias}}}}}}]] [[{{{alias}}}|{{ #if: {{{name|}}} | {{{name}}} | {{{shortname alias}}} }}]]

This change would allow for a "flag name alias" variable to be used in country_data template for countries where "alias" is not the same as "shortname alias". This variable would allow the alt text of flags to appear correctly. For example, in the case of Ireland, the alt text of the flag image would be able to read "Flag of Ireland" not "Flag of Republic of Ireland", as it does at present. The change would also allow related sporting flags (e.g. {{fb|Ireland}}) to display alt tags correctly. --sony-youthpléigh 22:02, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if you are suggesting a unique "flag name alias" for each flag variant, or a single 'global' one for the whole country_data template. If its the former, then I am reluctant to add that kind of logic, as these templates are in danger of getting far too bloated already. If its the latter, then that's similar to an idea we discussed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template, and I will see what I can do. Andrwsc 23:35, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It would be the latter. I cannot find the previous discussion. Do you have a direct link? Thanks, And. --sony-youthpléigh 07:08, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could there be a nolink= option added, possibly as the default. At the moment, repeated use of this template introduces a large number of links (eg. Isle of Man Airport#Statistics) to the same country. WP:OVERLINK discourages repeated links. —Sladen (talk) 22:25, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It says that in tables each row should stand on its own.--Patrick (talk) 22:35, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. If you only link the first instance, and change the sort criteria, then the single link may no longer be first. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:59, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two issues[edit]

  1. Why is the space between the flag and the country name not a non-breaking space?
  2. In  Great Britain why is the link to United Kingdom piped so that it reads “Great Britain”? Unionists in Northern Ireland might be offended by that.

A. di M.plédréachtaí 16:37, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. It is. You can see the output at Special:ExpandTemplates, and the   is present.
  2. Per the documentation at Template:Country data Great Britain, the "GBR" country code is widely used in a sporting context, where the country is (inaccurately) named "Great Britain". For non-sport related contexts, use {{flagcountry|UK}}, or better yet, {{flag|United Kingdom}}.
Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:42, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Weird, on my screen the country name sometimes ends up on a different line than the flag. Must be a bug in Firefox, I guess. A. di M.plédréachtaí 20:27, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This might (or might not) have to do with the non-breaking space being at the end of a <span> element. Anyway, putting {{nowrap}} around the flag and country name ought to solve the problem. A. di M.plédréachtaí 19:01, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposals: Specify "link=" value and nowrap flag image with text[edit]

Please consider and comment on these proposed changes at Template Talk:flag/core, which also relate to this (flagcountry/core) template. — Who R you? Talk 10:19, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ascension Island new flag[edit]

We can't. It's a non-free image, and the WP:NFCC policy prohibits non-free images from being transcluded via templates. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:53, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request: ROC -> Taiwan[edit]

Hello,

For the same reason the Wikipedia for the Republic of China is titled "Taiwan", could you please change the label to Taiwan in this template?

Especially as the label for the PRC is just "China" (the common name, not the official name), it would be less confusing if the label for the ROC was "Taiwan" (which most readers will easily understand) rather than "Republic of China" which is less easily understood. laug (talk) 04:00, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

European Union[edit]

The flagcountry for European Union displays "Europe" even where the proper name of the organization is entered. While is Europe is sometimes used for the European Union, this name is highly misleading, as in most contexts Europe is a continent. European Union is a beautiful, official, and non-ambiguous name for the European Union. I would appreciate if the name can be corrected. gidonb (talk) 15:40, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that you mean {{flagcountry|European Union}}, which emits  European Union, this is set by {{Country data European Union}} for which the discussion page is Template talk:Country data European Union. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:56, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nazi Germany[edit]

By the decision of using the template "flagcountry" for Nazi Germany, we get following result:

 Germany

This is definitely a micro aggression. The text beside the Nazi flag should be Nazi Germany and not Germany. They are two different things. The Germany before and the Germany after the Nazi period was entirely different: in politics, ethnicity, geographical, socially, demographically etc. Implying that Germany and Nazi Germany is the same is bigoted hate speech. I think it was just a mistake, but it would be nice if someone could correct it.--APStalk 09:36, 24 January 2018 (UTC) "@Albin Schmitt: I agree, the full name would be better. Template-protected edit request on 17 July 2020[edit]

Template:Flagcountry doesn't work properly. The code should replaced with this to work properly. {{country data {{{nation|{{{1|}}}}}}|flagcountry/core|variant={{{variant|{{{2|}}}}}}|size={{{size|}}}|name={{{name|}}}}} TheDerebeyi (talk) 08:15, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In this edit, an editor put |nation= into the Template Data programming section for Visual Editor, but |nation= is not supported. The correct name of this parameter is |1=. The documentation is not protected, so anyone can fix it if they are willing to edit the Template Data code. Adding |nation= is a bad idea, because mixing multiple named and unnamed parameters leads to human editors adding template transclusions that do not work correctly. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Poland-Lithuania problem[edit]

I noticed that {{flagcountry|Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth}} produces Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth Poland-Lithuania. This is a problem as it hides a pipe to Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth under a disambig name Poland-Lithuania. Full name should be used to avoid confusion but I can't figure out where is the code that needs changing? Help :) PS. Ping User:Snagemit and and User:GizzyCatBella who recently noted the problem in battle of Oliwa. Maybe you know how to fix this? I support using standardized templates, but this error needs fixing first. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:17, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. For future reference, you can put {{flagcountry|Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth}} into your user sandbox page, click Preview, and then fold down the "Templates used in this preview" arrow to see the templates and modules that are transcluded. One of them is the one you need to edit. Sometimes it can be tricky to figure out which one. (edited to add: I have edited the above example to show the original error.) – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:58, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Non-breaking space between flag and name doesn't work.[edit]

You can see this easily if you have multiple flags in a row, such as on the table in Abortion law, and resize your browser window, you will see that the flag doesn't stay on the same line as the name. Akeosnhaoe (talk) 08:35, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Refugee Nation proposal[edit]

I prpopose something like {{flagcountry|Refugee Nation}} or {{flagcountry|XXB}} (using the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code for refugees) to represent the Refugee Nation, of the people who consider themselves refugees. The movement is now quite big and even WhatsApp has added the Refugee Nation Flag emoji. It would could look something like this: Refugee or alternatively Refugee Nation. King regards for the consideration. Germenfer (talk) 15:14, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 2 September 2022[edit]

The change will allow usage of nameless "size" & "name" parameters and will ease usage of template in supported templates. CLalgo (talk) 08:53, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. Templates with multiple unnamed parameters are generally a bad practice, since it is easy for parameters to be omitted unintentionally, or for someone to type something malformed like {{flagcountry|USA|1776|size=250px|early flag}}. Please make a case that the benefit of adding these unnamed parameters exceeds the risk. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:03, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

visual text editor adds "nation="[edit]

when using the visual editor (that I'm using at least) I get {{country data {{{1}}}|flagcountry/core|variant=|size=|name=}} instead of  Main Page

(source: {{Flagcountry|nation=example}} vs {{Flagcountry|example}})

I don't know why "nation=" is added...  AltoStev (talk) 17:00, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think it does that because |nation= is the canonical parameter listed at Template:Flagcountry#TemplateData. Parameter |1= is listed as an alias of that parameter. The problem is that |nation= is not a valid parameter. I believe that it should be removed, and |1= should be the only option listed in that section. The documentation is not protected, even though the TemplateData section is programming code that affects how the Visual Editor inserts the template. This means that you can fix the TemplateData section yourself if you are feeling bold. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:24, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 3 September 2023[edit]

Switzerland and Vatican City currently only include previously used flags in this template. Currently {{Country data Switzerland}} uses File:Flag of Switzerland (Pantone).svg and {{Country data Vatican City}} uses File:Flag of Vatican City State - 2023 version.svg. Please update the template to include those 2 flags or to recognise square flags in general so they have an extra space in templates such as {{flagu}}.
