106 BCE[edit]

Emperor Wu of Han created the Thirteen Provinces in 106 BCE. (There weren't formed by Liu Bang in 206 BCE or soon after; Liu Bang maintained and expanded the Qin system of appointing hereditary princes to fiefs).

Emperor Wu also seems to have created provinces that have little to do with the ancient Nine Provinces, despite some similarities in names. This is why I split this template off from Template:Ancient Chinese provinces, those are all about the pre-imperial period. We should be clear in making this distinction, because the geography is also quite different:
