I found this error on an article talk page. It should not be splitting the category brackets apart with a newline inbetween.

Not done: Looking through your contributions I found your problem case at Talk:Bilbao (Mesoamerican site).

The template's an unholy mix of named parameters and positional parameters. For the category parameter to be recognised it needs to be first parameter or numbered to pretend it is.

Additionally, the category Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of History doesn't exist. Bazj (talk) 11:01, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

That doesn't actually fix the problem, because as illustrated here on this talk page, if you use an unnamed parameter, it still does it.

It is not true that the explicit numbering is necessary for the parameter to even work: "History" in {{Reqphoto|in=Guatemala|History|...}} is counted as the first unnamed parameter as expected. Adding the 1=, like in Bazj's second code block, does solve the problem with the newline, because leading and trailing whitespace is preserved for unnamed parameters and stripped for named ones in all template calls. The template itself could be quite easily changed to strip whitespace from unnamed parameters as well, though. SiBr₄ (talk) 17:43, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Requested edit

I would like to add this sentence (in regular-sized font), as I've done on {{diagram requested}}:

"Please replace this template with a more specific media request template where possible."

I've recently created a number of specific sub-templates for diagrams, and it would be helpful to encourage taggers to use the most specific tag they can. —Swpb^talk 14:45, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

After reading this request, I took the liberty of including the explanatory text with {{Media request templates}} when it is transcluded to the See also sections of the appropriate /doc subpages, and I added a little to possibly make it more clear for our less experienced editors. Requested edit

This template is used to request non-photographic images as well as photos, but in key places it indicates photos only, and incorrectly categorizes requests as such. For requests specifically for photos, {{photo requested}} may be used. Requested edits to this template:

1. Change "It is requested that a freely-licensed photograph" to "It is requested that a freely-licensed image or photograph"
2. Change all categories [[Category:Wikipedia requested photographs]], [[Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of {{{X}}}]] and [[Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in {{{X}}}]] to read "requested images"

No; right now the "requested photographs" categories contain a mix of requests for photos and non-photo images. I will seek consensus to rename those categories; the emptied "requested photos" categories can then be used strictly for photos, using {{photo requested}}. Coordinates as parameter?

Follow up to what User:WhisperToMe mentioned above: In de.wp there is de:Template:Bilderwunsch and it's small brother de:Template:Bilderwunsch/Listeneintrag which both can be used with and without coordinates. The use of coordinates takes the researching responsibility away from the photographer and puts it to the person requesting the pictures. With that it is a lot easier for the photographer to actually take the pictures, because he knows where to go. With the coordinates and with FNDE's tool bwAPI one can display this map of picture requests which can also be exported in some formats for GPS devices.

I personally perceive this infrastructure as the future of picture requests and I'm quite keen on including picture requests from en.wp into it. For that at least two coordinate parameters are needed, maybe also one that allows to use the coordinates of the article. Of course also FNDE's tool has to be translated, but that should be doable maybe even with translatewiki. Thanks for your support. It looks like User:FNDE is quite busy at the moment, which means that the implementation in bwAPI might take some time. If he lets me, I'm also willing to help with coding. But how do we go on here? Will we create a new template with coordinates and migrate existing template usages to that one? Or would it be smarter to add the coordinate parameters here and maybe another one to indicate if a request needs coordinates or not? --Flominator (talk) 12:27, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

We should definitely add parameters to this template rather than creating a new one and migrating. Because of the widespread use, we'll have to do very thorough sandbox testing before we request edits to the actual template. —swpb^{T go beyond} 15:22, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

What is the point of free=yes?

All non-free images should be replaced with a free equivalent if one is available. If it's a good idea to take up valuable talk page banner space with a block of text reminding people of that (and I don't), that would be better handled by a different template. Otherwise, what is the purpose? There are perhaps the hypothetical scenario of a subject for which a free alternative should be available, but so far in going through several hundred of these templates so far, I'm yet to see an instance of free=yes that has made sense to me. That block is there for articles where there is a non-free image present. Without it, someone may see "This article needs an image" and say "It already has an image", and maybe even remove the template. Some editors may also consider the complete absence of an image to be a more pressing concern than the need to replace a non-free one (or vice versa), and may want to sort requests that way. If the parameter isn't being used properly, that should be addressed, maybe in the doc, and maybe by rewording what it produces. Broken link in template

This template includes a link to the "Free Image Search Tool", but unfortunately it leads to error "502 Bad Gateway". Eepavan (talk) 13:45, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

The link to the "Free Image Search Tool" is still broken. I edited the sandbox to remove that string of text. (It might be better to replace it with a new image search tool, but I don't know of any.) I'm not sure who I should ping to actually get the change implemented in the live template. I'll look into it more. TJScalzo (talk) 13:02, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

I was able to access the tool after modifying the URL: this template uses https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/fist.php, which redirects to https://fist.toolforge.org/fist.php, which returns 404, but the tool appears to work just fine at https://fist.toolforge.org/fist/fist.php. Personally, I haven't seen a 502 yet, but that was more than a year ago after all. Template-protected edit request on 26 June 2020

Please update Template:Image requested to match my edit to its sandbox(diff). This fixes the link to Free Image Search Tool at the bottom of this template, which currently (see also my comment just above) redirects to a 404, by using a direct link instead of the broken toollabs: interwiki link. Template-protected edit request on 3 January 2021

Please update Template:Image requested to replace the dysfunctional toolforge link at the bottom with https://search.creativecommons.org/ Maybe there should also be a mention of Wikimedia Commons, which doesn't really have useful/usable image search functionality, alongside Flickr. --Prototyperspective (talk) 19:03, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

MSGJ, Sorry, it was a problem on my side. It's working now. (Maybe it didn't work because I made a change on my side when it didn't work before June.)

However, it's not showing any search results / images for many search terms and I don't find it very useful as is, especially when compared to that other site I linked above.

Instead of replacing it, could you please add that link next to it? if the |of= parameter is filled you could link to https://search.creativecommons.org/search?q={{{of}}} Prototyperspective (talk) 21:56, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 1 February 2021

I request that Template:Image requested be updated to match my edit to the sandbox(diff). This will change the text for the link to Creative Commons Search at the bottom of the template, which currently simply says creativecommons. This change makes it more clear where the link will bring the reader and matches the style of the other link in the sentence. This improves clarity and doesn't modify the actual behavior of the template, so I believe it to be an uncontroversial change. TJScalzo (talk) 10:48, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Commons

It would be a great step forward that these image requests could be also transcluded to Commons, because it is specialized in free media. In Commons, would appear where the request comes from (i.e. English Wikipedia, XXX article).--BoldLuis (talk) 17:30, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
