Specifying a title for the image

Module:InfoboxImage takes a title parameter, which is then used as the image caption in the wikitext source, which is in turn used to set a title attribute on the image. MediaViewer uses that title to display information about the image; other tools probably do likewise. Currently that parameter is omitted (and falls back to the alt parameter, which is a poor choice, but that's another matter); it should be set, with a value of {{{caption}}}. Tgr (WMF) (talk) 01:32, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Currently the title parameter is set to {{{event}}} if that exists, otherwise {{{title}}} if that exists, otherwise {{{name}}}, {{{Event_Name}}} or finally {{PAGENAME}}. Are you saying that all these should be replaced with {{{caption}}}? In any case, please make your proposed changes to Template:Infobox event/sandbox so that other editors can also comment. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:12, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Additional attributes

If this template is meant to be used for events beyond just disasters, which it appears to be, I think we should consider adding a few parameters, mostly borrowed from Template:Infobox recurring event:

  • Venue
  • Budget
  • Patron(s)
  • Organizers
  • People

I have implemented them on this template's sandbox for demonstration. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 06:54, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

@Varnent: have you considered just using {{Infobox recurring event}} instead or is there an example where this would be used? Frietjes (talk) 17:27, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
I did, but it's not exactly what that one seems to be really geared toward multi-year events and not one-off events. Here is an example: 1986 Balloonfest. At that point, I would almost prefer to suggest the two be merged, but I think there may be value in different setups. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 18:01, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
seems reasonable. I would support adding these additional parameter, since we are using the same syntax for both templates, which would facilitate merging the two later if there is desire to merge the two. Frietjes (talk) 22:59, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

@Varnent and Frietjes: Where did we get to with this? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:22, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Venue, Budget and Patron(s) have been added. we already had organizers and it's not clear how people is different from participants. Frietjes (talk) 20:24, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. On further inspection, I'm not sure how |venue= and |place= differ. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:43, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

additional URL links

I have reverted the addition of |audio_url= and |transcript_url= as this seems controversial. I recall additional external links have been removed from other infoboxes (e.g., imdb links from infobox person). why are these needed? seems like |website= could be used instead. Frietjes (talk) 15:16, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

You removed them with an edit summary of "seems controversial, discuss on talk page please".

They had already been removed, twice, by another editor. Their edit summaries were:

  1. "rv: under TfD as editor knows.Cannot take a shot at outcome." (I reverted with an edit summary of "Reason was nonsensical")
  2. "just writing 'nonsensical' is not an argument. Seee the TfD you yourself started. (I reverted with an edit summary of "Irrelevant"; not least because this template is not subject to a TfD)"

None of these is justification for revering an edit. Reverting as "seems controversial", in such a case, has the appearance of tag-teaming.

We need |audio_url=, because we already have |url= for video, but some events are only available as audio. And we need |transcript_url= for accessibility; because not everyone can access audio or video due to deafness and/ or blindness. |website= is for an official website of the subject, not a third-party website which has video or audio of the subject. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:12, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

and we have |URL= which is not the same as |url=. some parameters use underscore, some use spaces. some are capitalised, some aren't. there are many issues to resolve here. Frietjes (talk) 17:25, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

Duration

Any objection to adding |duration= for the duration of an event? Frietjes (talk) 15:40, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

No; I was about to add the same myself. And there's no need for you to ask, because WP:BOLD. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:08, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

I object. This very post leaves the burden of research with me (again). As this template is inovolved in a TfD, with under-motivated edits & reverts going on here, I do not agree on any change (even if it may be unrelated). It is more simple: keep the process clean first. (btw, what does stet mean?) -DePiep (talk) 17:31, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

DePiep, please provide a link for "As this template is inovolved in a TfD". as far as I can tell, this template is not currently part of any TfD or TfM, so I fail to see the connection. the proposal is to add |duration= so this information can be moved up to a position near |time= rather than at the bottom using |blank_label= and |blank_data=. Frietjes (talk) 16:01, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion#Template:Infobox_gunpowder_plotter. -DePiep (talk) 16:05, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
DePiep, (1) this template was not tagged for merger with that template and (2) there is no duration parameter in the gunpowder plotter template. Frietjes (talk) 16:16, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, not tagged for merge. That is one of the flaws in that TfD. Then an hoighly involved editor incites non-discussed edits by advising "you don't have to talk" here. -DePiep (talk) 16:32, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
DePiep, it seems we agree that the discussion for "gunpowder plotter" is not related to this discussion? so do you have an objection to adding |duration= to this template? Frietjes (talk) 17:04, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Frietjes, go ahead with your edit. Another case of loads of work that Andy puts on other peoples shoulders to get it right. -DePiep (talk) 17:45, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

English name, audio (c/f footage) and transcript

PotW added a param for the English name so that Salamat, Kaibigan would not need to use native_name for this purpose. This edit, and one removing audio and transcript parameters (which PotW apparently found to be unused?) were both reverted, apparently due to the similarity of |transcription_name= in {{Infobox gunpowder plotter}}, which is up for TfD. This was brought to discuss there, but was hard for me to figure out. Someone else did, and cleaned up the mess, but the discussion is still ongoing, apparently, so I created this section mainly to redirect it away from TfD. Currently, |English name= is in the infobox, and so are the removed parameters. —PC-XT+ 06:33, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

This has nothing whatsoever to do with {{Infobox gunpowder plotter}}, and neither that nor Salamat, Kaibigan are the reason I added |English name=. AFAICT, |transcription_name= is not used in the 'plotter template; it's certainly not in its documentation and I was unaware of its existence in that template until your post. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:07, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea. I just got caught up in this from TfD. I didn't mean to say Salamat, Kaibigan was the only reason for the addition, but that it was the first instance of the new parameter being used. I do support the addition for that and similar reasons, though. I don't believe |transcription_name= is used, either, but it is the only, um, connection to the TfD that I have found. FWIW, I have doubted that you knew about it from the start. I didn't know about it, myself, until I looked into this. I am not sure if this was actually confirmed as the reasoning for the revert. I don't know anything. —PC-XT+ 01:05, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Adding map option

Please can the following entirety of Draft:Template:Infobox event be copied and replace the entirety of the current contents. This will allow the use of maps to be shown which is typical with similar event infoboxes. See my sandbox for example. Thank you Jolly Ω Janner 08:43, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Jolly Janner, Please have a look at the template above. It's full of tools to make the job of making template requests easier, comparing sandbox to live, checking testcases, and the like. Could you put the code in the template's sandbox, and the testcases from your sandbox into the testcases page (The {{Testcase table}} it uses is a pretty good way of presenting testcases for infoboxes) so the tools will work? Could you also provide some indication that the change is uncontroversial or that it's been discussed somewhere and reached a consensus.
Sorry for being so blunt but I figure you'll find it preferable to having your request ignored for several days as all the TEs & admins pass it by in favour of more straightforward and complete requests.
Checklist: show it's uncontroversial or has consensus; sandbox; testcases. Thanks, Bazj (talk) 12:56, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
I don't mind waiting. I think a week without opposition should be okay. Thank you for your help, but it sounds a bit like too much work on my part, since the map can be added anyway (just without the grey line dividing the parameters); see Kollam temple accident. I'm pinging Plastikspork since he added the location map to {{Infobox civilian attack}} five years ago. Jolly Ω Janner 19:23, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
I second Bazj's very sensible suggestion above. We have standard names for these pages which then work much better with the request template. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:29, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Not done for now: Please perform the edits suggested by Bazj. Izno (talk) 23:45, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
  • I've added test cases to Template:Infobox event/testcases (see the temple fire in India at the bottom). The main reason is not so much to add the grey line, but to have a way of integrating the map as part of the infobox's documentation for future news events created by users unaware of the location template. I don't consider it controversial since it's been used by the similar {{Infobox civilian attack}} for five years. Of course, not all news events require a map, but editorial judgement can prevail. Casualties

This section has a heading that is omitted on mobile. This omission is in error, since its content is designed with its presence in mind, so without it we get for example Grenfell Tower fire saying "68 identified, up to 80 estimated dead" without saying what that 68 figure refers to. Why are the Parameters not customizable? Instead of "|first_reporter= -" I would prefer to use "|Reporting LEO". When I type in "Reporting LEO" instead it disappears from the template. This is possible, but a) it makes the template more complex and b) it's not obvious there is a lot of value in your proposal. Why do you want to do what you do? Is it more valuable than making the template more complex? --Izno (talk) 20:33, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

@Wyn.junior: I don't see the consensus or need to modify this template to exactly match the wording in that police report. Infoboxes are designed to present a summary of information in a consistent way from article to article, not to recreate source documents. --Ahecht (TALK

I have been waiting for over 13 days for anyone to bring objections. No one has brought any objections, including you. The template is only a suggestion of what headings to use, these do not have to be used. With this being said we need to make this template conducive to police reports. Please modify this template now.--Wyn.junior (talk) 18:58, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Well, actually, he did just object (I don't see the [...] need to modify this template to exactly match the wording in that police report). Templates are not suggestions. They are what you use to provide a consistent appearance across articles and to provide a summary, as Ahecht says. Saying "you must do this" is not going to get other people to agree with you or do the things you want on Wikipedia. As I said earlier, it makes the template more complex for details that aren't all that important to the topics we comment on, in so far as any details should be in an infobox. You should check first, in fact, to see whether this document is interesting to Wikipedia at all, on the article page--I am skeptical, as it is a primary source, and should thus be cited with care. --Izno (talk) 20:26, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Done – logos have been added using the |image= parameter. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 18:04, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, thank you for trying, but that is not what I meant. I could have put the logo in the image parameter myself, if that were what I had meant. The event infobox needs a specific logo parameter, to permit both the logo and an identifying image. Putting the logo in the image parameter at default size makes it look too big, anyway. Please could we now have an additional parameter, called "logo" in the events infobox? Quite a few other infoboxes have both the logo and the image parameter, and in those cases the default size of the logo is smaller than the default image size, indicating the priority of the image. Thank you for your patience. Storye book (talk) 22:03, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Further information: Here is an example of an infobox which has both a logo parameter and an image parameter: Royal Armouries Museum.
