Updated chronology[edit]

The IUGS has issued an update to the statigraphic time scale effective July 2012. See new chart here: [1] This should be incorporated into the protected period templates. MMartyniuk (talk) 09:53, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redundancy[edit]

There is a redundant template: Template:Geologic_Ages_Inline. Which one should be kept/replaced? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdfekete (talkcontribs) 18:20, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jdfekete! I created the template "Geologic Ages Inline" because Wikiproject Geology needed a template that returns the timescale ages with their standard error. There is no redundancy because "period_start" and "period_end" don't return standard errors. --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:03, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, merging is a bad idea, because other templates (e.g. Template:Fossil range) require that numbers are displayed without error bars, tildes, etc. If maintaining two sets of numbers is too much work then {{geologic ages inline}} could be modified so that individual lines call {{period start}}. Edit Request "This template needs cleaning up"[edit]

To me the template layout looks like a mess, with spacing after the dash, unoffical periods not in a seperate place, missing some alternative spellings and some official periods, and dates off by several hundred thousands of years. I cleaned up simple English's wiki edit page 2 months ago. The cleaned up text is shown below, you may copy it into the official template but be sure to check some errors to fix or create the sandbox page to test this.

Updated error margins[edit]

The latest chart - http://www.stratigraphy.org/index.php/ics-chart-timescale - appears to have updated many of the error margins from what is currently being used by the template. I haven't checked all of the dates so some of those may also have changed. I would be happy to do the drudge but don't have access so someone else will need to go thru and cross-check all the dates and errors.

One final (important) thing, where the error is an integer value and the reference (ie above-linked chart) lists trailing zeroes (eg 1.0), pls include these in the template as they are an explicit indicator of precision. Thx. 124.169.82.178 (talk) 04:30, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please review this year's changes to the sandbox and then replace the production code with my last version. Question: what should be happening with the existing 95 transclusions of {{Geologic Ages Inline}}? — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 22:53, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy M. Wang: Yes, those three test cases are an example of newly supported cases that are not supported by the current live template. All currently supported cases continue to be supported by the sandbox as well. The template {{Geologic Ages Inline}} should be rewritten to make use of {{Period start}}, {{Period start error}} and {{Period start ref}}, so modification of its transclusions should not be necessary. ICS update 2017[edit]

http://www.stratigraphy.org/index.php/ics-chart-timescale have recently released a new version V2017/2 which changes some of the dates such as the Permian now ends 251.902 instead of 252.2 mya (along with this being the start of the Triassic), The Carnian now ends 227 instead of 228 (along with this being the start of the Norian), The Ladinian now ends 237 instead of 235 mya.Lavalizard101 (talk) 21:09, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so to be precise:
| mesozoic
| triassic
| lower triassic
| induan = 252.17
needs 251.902 instead of 252.17.
| norian = 227
needs 228 instead of 227.
However, {{period end|ladinian}} yields 237, so this appears to be correct already.
If this is confirmed, I (or another editor with the right privileges) can make these two changes. Peter coxhead (talk) 21:50, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed that some of these period start times are outdated ("Middle Pleistocene", "Late/Upper Pleistocene"). the current start dates they have are 0.781 and 0.126 mya, respectively, when they should be 0.774 and 0.129 mya, respectively. I've also noticed that some time periods have received new names (the Chibanian was officially ratified in Jan. 2020) that haven't been added yet. I've also noticed that some time periods have alternate names that haven't been added here yet, including:

  • the upper pleistocene can be called the late pleistocene or the tarantian
  • the lower pleistocene can be called the early pleistocene
  • the middle pleistocene can be called the Chibanian (as previously discussed) or the Ionian
  • the greenlandian can be called the early holocene or the lower holocene
  • the northgrippian can be called the middle holocene
  • the Meghalayan can be called the upper holocene or the late holocene

here's an example of everything that needs to be changed:

= 0.129<!--new start date as defined by the ICS as of Jan. 2020. add this to the current template code-->
| holocene | greenlandian | early holocene | lower holocene <!-- lower/early holocene are implied from ICS chart. add this to the current template code -->
                         = 0.0117
| northgrippian | middle holocene <!-- middle holocene is implied from ICS chart. add this to the current template code -->
                         = 0.0082
| meghalayan | late holocene | upper holocene <!-- late/upper holocene are implied from ICS chart. add this to the current template code -->

These dates are from the book Geologic Time Scale 2020. The book contains chapters for each period, and provides images which list the base of every geologic stage. But I realize that a change is unnecessary, given that many of these changes are not as of yet defined, they are simply given as candidate ages. Meekororum (talk) 17:00, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Geological Time Scale 2020[edit]

I was wondering for the sake of whoever runs this template: should it be updated according to the 2020 edition of the Geological Time Scale ([2])? I've noticed that there are some differences between the boundary age estimates given in the book when compared to the ICS chart ([3]) and GSSP list ([4]), despite being run by basically the same people. I believe that the book has been updated with more recent data than the ICS publications in most cases, and it would be useful to have that show up in the template considering how widely used it is. Fanboyphilosopher (talk) 21:35, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If updates are needed, feel free to sandbox them (to ensure they work properly) and then propose a change. Primefac (talk) 07:59, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that I'm asking which source should be the main reference (ICS chart and list or GTS2020) for the dates and GSSP info given, if they are in conflict. The former mostly relies on GTS2012 with a few small edits up to 2022, while the latter is a fully revised edition. What is the standard procedure for this kind of situation? • Aptian from ~125 to ~121.4
  • Hauterivian from 132.9 to 132.6
  • Wuchiapingian from 259.1 to 259.51
  • Capitanian from 265.1 to 264.28

Template-protected edit request on 14 January 2023[edit]

I am requesting an edit to this template because, once again, some of the boundaries of the time periods have been changed. This new data comes from the International Commission on Stratigraphy's latest rendition of the geologic timescale: [6], Changelog: [7]

The changes are:

  • Tithonian from 152.1 to 149.2
  • Kimmeridgian from 157.3 to 154.8
  • Oxfordian from 163.5 to 161.5
  • Callovian from 166.1 to 165.3
  • Bathonian from 168.3 to 168.2
  • Bajocian from 170.3 to 170.9
  • Aalenian from 174.1 to 174.7
  • Toarcian from 182.7 to 184.2
  • Pliensbachian from 190.8 to 192.9
  • Sinemurian from 199.3 to 199.5
  • Hettangian from 201.3 to 201.4
  • Hadean from ~4600 to 4567

The Hadean change is explained in the provided changelog, in case it seems weird. I've already updated the sandbox with these dates, and I will update the uncertainties on Template:Period start error and Geologic time scale. Benniboi01 (talk) 18:49, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Primefac, I made a mistake with the Hadean GSSA. The Hadean age is actually 4567.3, not 4567. Could you fix it? I can submit another request if needed. Benniboi01 (talk) 18:08, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Primefac (talk) 11:24, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 29 August 2023[edit]

Description of suggested change: Update to ICC v2023/06

Two minor changes to dates in this update. Langhian from 15.97 to 15.98, and Barremian from ~129.4 to 125.77. Changed in the sandbox and appears to be working correctly in the test cases.

Diff:

barremian | gallic = 129.4
+
barremian | gallic = 125.77
langhian = 15.97
+
langhian = 15.98

Template-protected edit request on 30 October 2023[edit]

A new timescale came out a few days ago with the archean GSSA updated. For the line that reads:

| eoarchean | isuan = 4000

replace it with:

| eoarchean | isuan = 4031

Thank you! Benniboi01 (talk) 03:16, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
