Template talk:Pic of the day

Template:Pic of the day is permanently protected from editing because it is a heavily used or highly visible template. Substantial changes should first be proposed and discussed here on this page. If the proposal is uncontroversial or has been discussed and is supported by consensus, editors may use {{edit protected}} to notify an administrator to make the requested edit. Usually, any contributor may edit the template's documentation to add usage notes or categories.

Any contributor may edit the template's sandbox. This template does not have a testcases subpage. You can create the testcases subpage here.

Was there a reason you switched the layout to be wider? I liked this version. Having it more vertical would allow it to be put in a table with something else on the side of it. My talk page for example looks fairly bad on an 800*600 screen as I want the picture to the right of the intro text. Angela . 21:04, May 14, 2004 (UTC)

On my user page it's the exact opposite - in vertical form it clashes with the table. I'll try to figure out if the positioning can be done outside the MediaWiki text, so that the person using the text can decide how it should look.--Eloquence *

Would it be best to keep an archive, or just to bold the ones that have been used in Wikipedia:Featured pictures? Something should be done to prevent the same being repeated. Perhaps just a list on a subpage would be enough?

Then again, featured pictures do keep an archive as well as bolding. I think it could be useful to have a visual record to help with choosing the next day's picture to make sure you don't get a string of very similar images used over a short period. I agree that the FA block should stay as it is, but couldn't this page be displayed right-justified to the 'Browse Wikipedia by topic' block on the Main Page or (perhaps better) centered at the bottom of the Main Page? A 7 day queue could also be made by having MediaWiki:Pic of the day for Monday, MediaWiki:Pic of the day for Tuesday, ... ect and using {{msg:Pic of the day for {{CURRENTDAYNAME}}. The developers are aware of it. Don't get upset just yet. Only aa: and af: have been upgraded so far so it'll be a while before they get to en. I expect they'll find an alternative solution before then, and if they don't - your work isn't lost. It just means manually updating the Main Page once a day rather than relying on {{CURRENTDAY}}. Could there be few simple templates with single things, to be used e.g. as:

[[Image:{{POTD/file}}|thumb|100px|{{POTD/caption}}]]

which today would expand to:

   [[Image:Arizona cap canal.jpg|thumb|100px|Arizona cap canal]]

in addition to the standard and complete {{pic of the day}} and {{POTD}} templates, so one could make a thumb easily? I would suggest these:

{{POTD/file}} — today it would be "Arizona cap canal.jpg"
{{POTD/caption}} — today "Arizona cap canal"
{{POTD/article}} — today "Central Arizona Project Aqueduct"

of course it could be named {{pic of the day/file}} or {{POTD file}} or {{POTDF}} or whatever would seem to be best here (the shortest ones would probably be preferable), but it would be very useful to have those basic things accessible independently.

It would be great to have it for every weekday version of {{POTD}}, like maybe {{POTD Monday/file}} or {{POTDF Monday}} to build nice rotating thumbnail galleries easily composed into user pages etc.

To avoid causing corruption of the link table, the template has to be updated manually each day. This already involves editing template:POTD, template:pic of the day, the two templates that relate to the current day, the archive, and featured images page. It is not practical to add another three templates on top of this. If you want to keep the three new templates updated every day, go ahead, but I don't think it is going to be widely enough used to go to the effort of maintaining this. More or less. Your two options are to add {{Pic of the day}} to get the version with a caption as shown here, or add {{POTD}} for the condensed version. Both update automatically each day. In the past we have tried some experiments so that the POTD version can take a parameter to specify a prefered width for the picture - but we haven't really got that cracked. -- Solipsist 17:56, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

the box and heading should go on this template. Or there should at least also be a version without them, so they can be used in more different contexts. Such as some main pages. Maybe the best solution is to create

{{Wikipedia:Today's featured picture/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}

Slight mistake on today's caption[edit]

Hmmm, tricky. According to our article on him, his peerage was in 1999. So yes he would have been Lord Foster by the time the reading room opened, although I guess it was Sir Foster for most of the restoration. In either case, it might be easier to avoid the reference altogether. Foster and Partners certainly designed the glass roof for the Great Court redevelopment, but I wouldn't be so sure that they were involved in any (minimal) changes to interior of the reading room illustrated. -- Solipsist 08:17, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Change center alignment to justified[edit]

Whenever the image is very wide, the text is placed below the image and is center aligned. As described in the article on alignment, "Centered text is considered less readable for a body of text made up of multiple lines because the ragged starting edges make it difficult for the reader to track from one line to the next."
