Mimico Yard[edit]

I recently created the Mimico Yard section. I think the "Willowbrook Yard" entry should be replaced by Mimico Yard which mentions Willowbrook Rail Maintenance Facility, Willowbrook Yard and Via Toronto Maintenance Centre. Would you agree? @Julius177: Mimico Yard. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 02:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Mimico should take priority, though I think it would be ideal to have both in there. To be honest I've overhauled this navbox extensively as it was structured in somewhat eccentric ways, but it still has a long way to go. Sadly there isn't much that can be done with it right now until an enormous amount of additional content gets written. Especially since you seem to be improving yard/MSF articles, I'd actually suggest in the long run that we could explore a "rail yards in ontario" navbox – while many yards would struggle to meet notability for standalone articles, they are very logical for inclusion as sections within subdivision or station articles, for example, which could be linked to with section links or anchors. I believe splitting off yards would be better WP:NAVBOX practice in working toward comprehensive coverage. I believe this may be somewhat outside of the scope of your work, however, but I felt like I should bring it up as it's something I've considered in the past, and I am not really a specialist for yards. For the short term, here are the possibilities I see:
  • Using Mimico Yard as the primary reference point for the navbox.
  • Pros are: clean, concise, creates a central reference point to a set of topics that sprawl over several articles but couldn't easily be condensed into a single coherent one
  • Cons: harder to find the other articles, could mislead readers who are browsing casually
  • Flat list of all yard articles
  • Pros: comprehensive, makes all articles directly accessible from a wide variety of pages
  • Cons: clutters the navbox, leads to potential over-focus on a single yard complex
  • Pros: contains links to both articles, creates a clear sense of hierarchy
  • Cons: as-is, positions the Via Rail maintenance facility as hierarchically higher than the GO Transit one, since the Mimico link currently redirects to the Via-specific article, also potentially clutters the navbox template further with added parentheses
This is just a suggestion as I'm not too concerned with how it's displayed currently in this navbox, since as I said ideally in the long term I'd like to migrate yards to their own specific-topic navbox. However I think it helps to get the structure nailed earlier rather than later so that this can be a smooth migration once there's enough content and links to justify it. I will implement your preferred option: Mimico Yard (Willowbrook Yard). Note: The article section List of rail yards#Canada lists yards in Ontario; it consists mainly of unsourced entries. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 19:10, 24 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
