what about vertical scrolling?[edit]

Can this be set up for vertical scrolling? That would be a huge boon to this site. Svnpenn (talk) 05:37, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I arrived here with the same question. This here is about horizontal scrolling. Is it possible somehow to set vertical scrolling, holding the header row on the screen instead of having it scroll out of sight? There is {{Scrolling window}} which scrolls vertically, but does not freeze a table's title row. (And there is similar but deprecated {{Scroll box}}, also no help. --doncram 21:58, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I found this fixed header row extension in mediaWiki. It doesn't look to be easily just added to the page, you would need to first install it I guess.. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FixedHeaderTable --Juhis jwvaofbrnscwdof (talk) 15:45, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This very sophisticated scrolling table has a fixed header row that stays visible while scrolling the table up and down:

Mobile version[edit]

@Waldyrious: thank you for this very useful template. There's an issue: in the mobile version, a line break appears between the leftmost (fixed) column and the rest of the table. Could you give a hint how to fix it? colt_browning (talk) 15:41, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Colt browning. I'm sorry but it's been a long time since I worked on this template, and I don't recall the details of the implementation at the moment. I'd have to dig into the code and explore a bit, as well as debug changes on an actual mobile phone (I can't reproduce the issue on a desktop, even in the browser developer tools' mobile mode). As I'm currently busy with other priorities, I don't think I'll be able to investigate this issue for the time being. But thanks for raising the question — hopefully someone else may be able to chime in with some insight. It may be a good idea to ask for help in WP:VPT, by the way. Cheers, Waldyrious (talk) 10:15, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps, I've now added some basic implementation notes to the documentation. Waldyrious (talk) 10:43, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, did some investigating. The issue seems to be that on en.m.wikipedia.org the float: left property on the table with the static headers is being overruled and is instead set to float: none. Changing it to float: left !important would be one way to fix the issue. Jexio (talk) 23:21, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Actually, I was able to solve the problem as follows: [1] [2] [3]. But a better solution would be something like this. colt_browning (talk) 23:48, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jexio:
I edited your fix into the {scrolling table/top} template, but on mobile it made the non-static table completely disappear (I undid the edit soon after). I'm extremely inexperienced with CSS so I can't offer any explanation why it failed, what do you think? OlliverWithDoubleL (talk) 18:20, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
