Time offsets[edit]

I made a whole bunch of changes to this template. The biggest of course was the time offsets. Anyone might think the current local time in France was UTC+1 if I hadn't corrected it.

Now, does this confuse people, or help them?

Are we all clear on the difference betweew time zones and time offsets?

And most of all, do our readers want to know the current time offset in France (e.g., UTC+2) or do they want to know that when it's not on European Summer Time France observes UTC+1? I'm not from Europe, so I wouldn't know. --Uncle Ed 18:40, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IP edit warring[edit]

IP edits

revert the following changes without explanation:

  • transformation to wikisyntax,
  • addition of Kaliningrad,
  • explicit labeling of all color used,
  • using hue4map colors,
  • setting template width to 300px,
  • using more specific link to European Summer Time instead of a link to DST.

Coloring[edit]

Why does English Wikipedia need to use color system of some other Wikipedias???

While I was browsing I have noticed that unilateral changes of the coloring was made in the Template:Time zones of Europe ‎ without any consensus and without taking into consideration as another user has pointed out before me, that many other Wikipedias outside the English Wikipedia are indeed using this template for many templates and articles and have done their categorizations according to this coloring, because these long established colors have been used for years.
Indeed any unilateral change of colors confuses categorizations in the different languages, not to mention in English Wikipedia. Please refrain from changing the entire coloring.
If you have to do changes do not change the colors but do the categorizations according to these colors and add new colors for countries which have changed their time zones or stopped observing Daylight Saving Time, as have been done previously.

Suggestion for new coloring for all time zone templates for continents and also countries by using this map created by Phoenix B 1of3 - and importantly is also taking DST into account:
Worldwide Time Zones (including DST). (as of September 20, 2011).
The coloring that TZ master created and the coloring that Maphobbyist reverted to are both kitsch. This is my personal subjective criticism about the use of flashy or pale color versions for the template. No personal offense is intended to either user. The disagreement is obiously about the labelling.
The version used Phoenix B 1of3 is ideal as he or she created a Worldwide Time Zones map which includes DST and this map would be very easy to implement to the time zone templates for continents and countries. --Menikure Talk 02:00, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My objection in the labeling UTC hUE4 scheem by TZ master also is, that the hue system is not taking DST into account, and that is why time zone maps are more complicated. For instance some countries or their units either use them or not. And this is not reflected in the hue system. --Menikure Talk 07:22, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The hue4map system is made for UTC offsets. At any point in time there is only one official UTC offset. If one wants to show different points in time one can look for methods to display them, e.g. using stripes, or using different saturation or key. The hue is only one variable in the HSV color system. There are several colors having the same hue. E.g. DST areas could use a darker color but same hue as for the basic time.
The latest time map Phoenix B 1of3 created uses the hue4map system too: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UTC_hue4map_ATA.png, he also said his world map used no pattern and he will make a hue4map version for the world map with DST. DST is shown on the hue4map for Europe too: commons:File:UTC hue4map X region Europe.svg. DST and hue4map system do not exclude each other.
Regarding pale or flashy colors - hue is only hue, pale and flashy is determined by other factors. TZ master (talk) 14:07, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UTC hue4map unified coloring system[edit]

Below are some images using the hue4map unified coloring system, the hue repeats every 6 hours, longitude= 0 -> hue=0 (red). Thus UTC, UTC+6, UTC+12, UTC-6 all use red. UTC+1, UTC+7, UTC+13, UTC-5 all use yellow. Using a unified color system allows the reader to easier recognize offsets, and reduces the number of colors used on a page like UTC+08:00, where maps from Russia, China, Indonesia and Australia are shown.
