This template cannot be used with Template:Babel. Officially Wikipedia:Babel is made for languages not for writing systems, so the scripts should maybe not be there anyway.

Andrew also suggested not to use 6 levels. Maybe some users know Cyrl-russian and not the serb characters or the non-slavic stuff. Or only can decipher greek very slow, maybe not complete. If users like to show the differences, maybe let them. Free world, no big harm.

For Kana, I put あ. I assumed people don't use か to write the word “kana” in the Japanese writing system, since its Japanese WP article is at [仮名] Error: {{Lang}}: script: jpan not supported for code: ja (help), not at [かな] Error: {{Lang}}: script: jpan not supported for code: ja (help). In this case, か may be slightly misleading, so we could as well use any syllable. Feel free to change, I don't oppose anything. Problems with Georgian and Korean[edit]

The Georgian boxes talk about "the Georgian (Mkhedruli)." The word "alphabet" needs to be put in there somewhere. Similarly, the Korean boxes talk about "the Hangul"; it should probably say something like "the Korean script (Hangul)". Richwales 04:01, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

individual colors[edit]

Very nice job with the new box : )
I see that it has several options, but I'm not exactly sure of the syntax intended to "set". For example, if I wanted to set it so that the colours matches what grk-5 had before deletion. How would I do that? Thank you in advance for your help : ) - jc37 00:37, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thank you :-). I had no intention to allow individual coloring. But seems you don't like the current level 5 color. I think the colors should be harmonized with the language templates. there are not many options. you can only choose a writing system (e.g. Grek) and your kowledge level in this writing system. Level-0 user categories are no longer added by this template, per the recent UCfD that closed with a decision to delete such categories. I made a small error in the coding that temporarily removed users from all ISO-15924 categories, but it was just corrected and should make its way through the job queue shortly. mong looks strange on IE-7[edit]

Hi, I just created some boxes for the classic Mongolian script. Unfortunately IE 7 breaks the line between "Mong-" and "1" or "5" in the userboxes, making them even bigger than they already are (as in {{User iso15924|Mong|1}}). It looks OK in the category headers, probably because these use a smaller font. I have no idea what could be done, but I would prefer the line not to be broken. Any ideas? Character change didn't happen?!?[edit]

I changed the Georgian character just now in Template:User iso15924/character, but the change doesn't seem to be taking effect in the userbox. Did I do something wrong? Does some additional step need to be taken in order for a character change to be included? Is there some batch job involved, and I just need to be a bit more patient? Minor issue...[edit]

Having at last located where these boxes have been hidden (talk about user-unfriendly), I found myself unable to figure out how edit them. The reason that I wish to do so is that two of the boxes have errors; these are the user-cyrs box (has a stray >) and the user-gujr box (has a stray | in it, which screws up the entire box).

Also, I really do think that these should be made Babel-compatible, as writing systems are a vital component of language, especially on Wikipedia (what good is advertising that you know a language without being able to write it, eh?).

These really should be made more visible. And less confusing. This whole thing is a bit of a fustercluck, IMO.

Supercats[edit]

Resolved

I removed "[[Category:User {{{1}}}]]" as this is always a supercategory of "[[Category:User {{{1}}}-{{{2}}}..." which immediately followed it (Category:User Cyrl is a supercat of Category:User Cyrl-1). However, looking at only one userpage this appears not to have significantly reduced the number of number of supercats (there are still 11, with only Category:User Cyrl going away). Looks like the problem is with the various User X-Y templates used by Template:Babel (for example Template:User en-N). Greek "script"?[edit]

{{user iso15924|Grek|2}} produces a userbox with the following text: "This user has an intermediate understanding of the Greek script." Why "script"? Why not "alphabet"? Error messages for parameter#1 <> 4 chars and parameter#2 empty?[edit]

I'm no template guru but I've been working on red-linked categories, and I've come across several that are the result of incorrect use of this template. See the discussion I had over at User_talk:DePiep#Template:User_iso15924 for details but two main points have come up :

Can parameter#1 be tested to see that it only has 4 characters (better still, letters) and if not, return a friendly error message, and better still withhold application of any categories other than a maintenance category? I've seen several instances of people trying to use this template to indicate ability at languages rather than scripts - see User:Kkhemet for an example.
Can parameter#2 be assigned a default and/or error message if it is empty? It would stop ugly categories being created such as on User:Thekaleb
