Why is this in Japanese?[edit]

This template is in Japanese, which isn't terribly helpful. Presumably, the template is meant to identify native speakers to other Wikipedians who are either looking for translators or checking the editor's claimed credentials for a particular edit. The only way that I can tell that someone is claiming to speak Japanese specifically is to click on the "ja" link, if I know to do that.

Since this is en.wikipedia.org, wouldn't it make sense to have this template in English, describing the user as someone who understands Japanese? -Harmil 20:34, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hanasu koto ga dekiru[edit]

This template, as well as User ja-1, User ja-2, and User ja-3, contains the wording: 日本語を話すことができます。 This is (more or less literally) "can speak Japanese." Surely the point is not speaking but using Japanese (especially written Japanese) to contribute to Wikipedia. Other templates such as User-es and User-fr use words that more clearly suggest contributing (Spanish: contribuir; French: contribuer). Shouldn't　the Japanese templates read　日本語で述べることができます (can add/comment/speak　in Japanese) or 進言できます / 進言することができます (can contribute/suggest)? Alternately, they could simply read この利用者は(level)の日本語ができます (For this user [level] Japanese is possible). Cnilep (talk) 17:46, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
