Reoganizing the Wikibooks templates[edit]

Should we reorganize these and even merge them all? It would be easy enough using m:Parser_functions. --Swift 03:34, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've set up a Proof of Concept template at {{wikibooks-poc}}. Please have a look. --Swift 01:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, but the old one is needed too, because there are a lot of books using the colon convention. Cookbooks in particular has a lot of pages, many of which are linked from WP. --SB_Johnny | talk 11:43, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The colon convention has been deprecated and those books should be changed to the new convention. Once that is done, the template is redundant. --Swift 16:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but unfortunately there are some grandfathered, and some namespaced.
Will template usages with subst: show up as links to the templates, BTW? --SB_Johnny | talk 16:19, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Grandfathered? Namespaced? My understanding was that WB didn't like giving namespaces to books/projects since they aren't made for that purpose. Could you give some links/examples?
The subst:-s won't matter because they've been ... err ... subst:-ed. A template that is substituted doesn't reference the template any more. The contents of the template are simply inserted into the article once and for all so changing the template doesn't change the substituted content. --Swift 21:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Cookbook has its own templates, see Wikipedia:Template_messages/Links#Wikibooks which, by the way, I've just suggested be merged. --Swift 23:13, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've just upgraded the template with changes from {{Wikibooks-poc}}. I'm going to start deprecating the others. See User:Swift/Projects#Wikibooks for a table with redundancies. --Swift 22:15, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TfD nomination of Template:Wikibookspar[edit]

Template:Wikibookspar has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. Swift 22:02, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template survived with a speedy keep due to number of articles using it. {{Wikibooksarticle}} seems like it will be deleted, though. --Swift 22:21, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TfD nomination of deprecated Wikibooks templates[edit]

Template:Book, and other deprecated Wikibooks templates, have been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the templates' entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. -- kenb215 21:42, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bold link[edit]

Shouldn't the content link be bolded to be consistent with the other wiki sisterlinks? Vicarious 19:39, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --- RockMFR 17:25, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Wikibooks" for our purposes are external links[edit]

Do not link to a wikibooks article simply because it is there. Wikibooks is essentially a free webhost for cranks. Only link to a "wikibook" if it is of a quality that would justify an external link to a non-wikimedia site. dab (𒁳) 11:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tricky one[edit]

How do I put up a wikibook reference to http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Robotics:_Design_Basics:_Design_software using this template? --Abdull (talk) 16:03, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see -- this template assumes the "book name/chapter name" convention, although Robotics and a few other books have the "book name: chapter name" convention.

I suppose you could do it this way:

   {{wikibooks|Robotics: Design Basics: Design software}}

Is there a better way? --68.0.124.33 (talk) 23:15, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Atlas Shrugged and other non-copyrighted content[edit]

Shouldn't there be a section for primary sources that are in wikibooks such as for the article Atlas Shrugged? --Keerllston 22:00, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You mean like wikisource?--Joel (talk) 06:15, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clickable image[edit]

{{editprotected}}
Please make it so when the Wikibooks logo is clicked, instead of going to the image description page, it goes to the corresponding Wikibooks page. It can be done by changing the image link to this:
[[Image:Wikibooks-logo.svg|50px|link=Wikibooks:{{{1|Special:Search/{{PAGENAME}}}}}]]
-- penubag  (talk) 07:28, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Space missing[edit]

{{editprotected}} There should be a space between "Wikibook" and the title of the Wikibook. There appears to be no space in the last three examples on this template page. —Kenyon (t·c) 04:06, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Should be fixed now. --- RockMFR 22:19, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strange formatting[edit]

If I try and paste the examples in the documentation

{{wikibooks
 |Chemical synthesis
 |Gallium
}}

I get weird formatting

They only seem to work if I remove the spaces {{wikibooks|Chemical synthesis|Gallium}}--Salix (talk): 09:01, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the examples. Ideally we should give names to the parameters, but for now this will work. Maybe someone with a bot can give this a fixup in the future. -SCEhardT 22:59, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Test

end test

I still see the same problem Salix saw -- I copy and paste an example in the documentation:

{{Wikibooks
|Fundamentals of Transportation
|Trip Generation#Estimating Models
|Estimating Models}}

and I expected to see two links (one with visible text "Fundamentals of Transportation", the other with the visible text "Estimating Models"). But what I actually see inside the pretty infobox is the the visible non-linked text

[[wikibooks: Fundamentals of Transportation
| Fundamentals of Transportation
]]

where I expected the first link (the second link is good).

Temporary workaround: If I put the first and second parameter on the same line like so:

{{Wikibooks
| Fundamentals of Transportation | Trip Generation#Estimating Models
| Estimating Models
}}

the infobox looks OK. (In other words: I expected both boxes on the right to look the same, but they currently don't.)

Is this something we can/should fix in the template, or in the back-end code, so that it works the way this documentation says it works? --DavidCary (talk) 13:08, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like something which can be fixed, I'm creates Template:Wikibooks/sandbox with a version which wraps all the arguments in {{trim}} and it seems to work as can be seen by looking at Template:Wikibooks/testcases. I'll leave it a bit before updating main template in case there is some hidden problem, I don't quite understand how the main template is coded. --Salix alba (talk): 18:52, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've now made that version live. --Salix alba (talk): 19:24, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

has a page[edit]

This is often incorrect, there are many times pages, not just one. I suggest the wording is amended to say there is more. "Wikibooks has more on the subject of abc." SunCreator (talk) 12:23, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Close the 'div'[edit]

Hi!

There are unbalanced divs in the template. Could you close the tag? Helder (talk) 23:48, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

interwikies[edit]

Two templates are deleted: hr and it. I think the iw should be removed.

--Gdje je nestala duša svijeta (talk) 06:11, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

bad example[edit]

The Wikibook b:Chemical synthesis is deleted. The examples should use something that exists, in order to demonstrate the linking properly. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Mike Linksvayer (talk) 19:20, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

section links don't link to section[edit]

eg

{{wikibooks|Fundamentals of Transportation|Trip Generation#Estimating Models|Estimating Models}}

obtains

Note link is to Trip Generation, not Trip Generation#Estimating Models.

Mike Linksvayer (talk) 19:20, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting[edit]

I've never understood why this template offsets the link onto a new line. Having looked through the code, it also appears that the code to do this is broken, as the div tag is never closed. I've created a sandbox which removes this code and just formats the link normally, like {{commons}} and other sisterlink templates. If there are no objections I'll get this synced. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:05, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good work. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 14:18, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template fails if param 2 is null but param 3 is non-null[edit]

On behalf of a user, I tried to link to a book but display an alternate title:{{wikibooks|Oberon||Oberon OS}}. This fails, because the template creates a URL with an appended slash. I created a kluge workaround (a redirect at wikibooks) and counselled the user to make his wikibook titles match his pagenames, but I still think the template should be fixed. Thanks.-Arch dude (talk) 18:39, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
