Template talk:Wikibooks

Template:Wikibooks is permanently protected from editing because it is a heavily used or highly visible template. Substantial changes should first be proposed and discussed here on this page. If the proposal is uncontroversial or has been discussed and is supported by consensus, editors may use {{edit template-protected}} to notify an administrator or template editor to make the requested edit. Usually, any contributor may edit the template's documentation to add usage notes or categories.

Any contributor may edit the template's sandbox. Functionality of the template can be checked using test cases.

Reoganizing the Wikibooks templates[edit]

Should we reorganize these and even merge them all? It would be easy enough using m:Parser_functions. --Swift 03:34, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grandfathered? Namespaced? My understanding was that WB didn't like giving namespaces to books/projects since they aren't made for that purpose. Could you give some links/examples?

The subst:-s won't matter because they've been ... err ... subst:-ed. A template that is substituted doesn't reference the template any more. The contents of the template are simply inserted into the article once and for all so changing the template doesn't change the substituted content. --Swift 21:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Wikibooks" for our purposes are external links[edit]

Do not link to a wikibooks article simply because it is there. Wikibooks is essentially a free webhost for cranks. Only link to a "wikibook" if it is of a quality that would justify an external link to a non-wikimedia site. dab (𒁳) 11:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see -- this template assumes the "book name/chapter name" convention, although Robotics and a few other books have the "book name: chapter name" convention.

I suppose you could do it this way:

Strange formatting[edit]

If I try and paste the examples in the documentation

I get weird formatting

I still see the same problem Salix saw -- I copy and paste an example in the documentation:

and I expected to see two links (one with visible text "Fundamentals of Transportation", the other with the visible text "Estimating Models"). But what I actually see inside the pretty infobox is the the visible non-linked text

where I expected the first link (the second link is good).

Temporary workaround: If I put the first and second parameter on the same line like so:

the infobox looks OK. (In other words: I expected both boxes on the right to look the same, but they currently don't.)

It looks like something which can be fixed, I'm creates Template:Wikibooks/sandbox with a version which wraps all the arguments in {{trim}} and it seems to work as can be seen by looking at Template:Wikibooks/testcases. Formatting[edit]

I've never understood why this template offsets the link onto a new line. Having looked through the code, it also appears that the code to do this is broken, as the div tag is never closed. I've created a sandbox which removes this code and just formats the link normally, like {{commons}} and other sisterlink templates. If there are no objections I'll get this synced. Template fails if param 2 is null but param 3 is non-null[edit]

On behalf of a user, I tried to link to a book but display an alternate title:{{wikibooks|Oberon||Oberon OS}}. This fails, because the template creates a URL with an appended slash. I created a kluge workaround (a redirect at wikibooks) and counselled the user to make his wikibook titles match his pagenames, but I still think the template should be fixed.
