Inspiration[edit]

For future reference: this template was inspired by Template:Wl at the Italian Wikisource, which was mentioned by Luca Martinelli in the Wikidata chat room on Telegram.

Improvements[edit]

  • The template should probably check whether the existing article matches (i.e. is connected to) the Wikidata ID, for concepts that share the same name. I realized this when I tried to produce the link in the section above using {{Wikidata fallback link|Luca Martinelli|Q26773031}}, which ended up linking to Luca Martinelli -- a different person.
  • We might want to include a "create" link, maybe shown on hover? That way the aspect of red links that should encourage their creation is not lost.

Hi Waldir, I just stumbled on this template. It shares some of the aims and features with Template:Wikidata red link which I created recently. The main difference is that mine will show a red link when the article doesn't exist, which will help to encourage creation. What do you think about merging these templates into one? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:59, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Waldyrious: fixing ping for new username! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:44, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey MSGJ, long time no talk! Yeah, the templates should probably be merged. I like the red link aspect, but I do worry that exposing the Q numbers may not be the most friendly interface for readers who are not aware of Wikidata. Maybe something like Phu Khong (Wikidata item) could work? We could make it an opt-in behavior if you'd rather not use images by default (although a Q-number isn't that much more informative, tbh). WDYT? --Waldyrious (talk) 21:16, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How about [Wikidata] which is how {{ill}} outputs it? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:16, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed Template:Wikidata red link to use [Wikidata] and will start work on the merge shortly. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:14, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that's probably a better approach. (Sorry for the late reply.) --Waldyrious (talk) 17:57, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Consider merging with Template:interlanguage link[edit]

It looks like there is some overlap. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 22:54, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm planning initially to merge with Template:Wikidata fallback link because that template has the same aims as this one, a better name, but perhaps not as good functionality as this one — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:12, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
 Done, these are now merged — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:52, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
