The following is a timeline of Kurdish history, comprising important legal and territorial changes and political events in Kurdistan and its predecessor states and entities. To read about the background to these events, see History of the Kurds.

20th century[edit]

Year Date Event
1880 Unknown Sheikh Ubeydullah demanded independence for Kurdish people
1927 October 28 Republic of Ararat declared. See also the Ararat rebellion.
1945 August 16 Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan is founded.
1946 August 16 Kurdistan Democratic Party (Iraq) is founded.
1975 June 1 Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (Iraq) is founded.
1976 Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party (Iraq) is founded.
1978 November 25 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is founded.[1]
1985 Kurdistan Toilers' Party (Iraq) is splintered off from the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party.
1988 Anfal genocide begins. Between 50,000[2] and 182,000[3] Kurds are killed by Ba'athist Iraq.
1994 February 6 Kurdistan Islamic Union (Iraq) is founded.

21st century[edit]

2004 July 29 Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (Turkey) is founded.
2005 January 30 Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum, 2005
2012 October 15 Peoples' Democratic Party (Turkey) is founded.
2014 June 17–18 Battle of Kirkuk (2014)
2015 January 30 - February 1 Battle of Kirkuk (2015)
2016 October 21–24 Battle of Kirkuk (2016)
2017 September 25 Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum, 2017
2017 October 15 2017 Iraqi–Kurdish conflict begins, including the Battle of Kirkuk (2017).
2017 October 27 2017 Iraqi–Kurdish conflict ends. Massoud Barzani resigns from post of President of Iraqi Kurdistan; Kurdistan Regional Government accepts the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq's opposition towards independence; Kurdish authorities agree to hand over control of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports to the federal government. Iraqi Kurds lose the Kirkuk oilfields as their main source of revenue.
