Reordering of categories[edit]

Hi Æthelwold. I notice you recently reorded the categories of Martin Brundle and Ron Dennis. I'm currently updating the categories for a lot of the Formula One driver articles (adding [Category:<nationality> racecar drivers] for those who don't already have it). Is there any particular order you recommend the categories? If so, I can try to implement it as I update the articles. DH85868993 03:26, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just try to put the ones that are most likely to be useful to readers first, eg for drivers that's the ones to do with racing, not schools or places of birth etc. Æthelwold 22:23, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seems reasonable. DH85868993 03:15, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please refrain from doing an edit where the sole purpose is to reorder the categories for the subject, like you recently did for Parnelli Jones. I see no purpose in doing something so minor - what does it actually help? A particular ordering that makes sense to you might not to a different reader. I don't see how doing this helps to build an encyclopedia. My personal preference is to alphabetize the categories, but I have never done an edit just to reorder the categories. I don't have a major problem with your ordering scheme, even though it is subjective. Royalbroil 04:39, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Improving the navigability of the encyclopedia is not minor, it's an essential administrative task. Æthelwold 19:31, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You need to get together with other users like All Hallow's Wraith (talk · contribs), they just change the CATS and then you do, or vica-versa. ~ WikiDon 01:23, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
User:WikiDon contacted me with the same message on my talk page. I feel that this issue should be discussed on a project-wide basis and then some kind of definite policy/standard should be set. All Hallow's Wraith 05:43, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I have noticed that you did a lot of categorizing lately, and I am not sure if you are aware of the option to add {{DEFAULTSORT:Name, Firstname}} to articles for sorting articles' appearance in categories without having to do that for each category entry in the article. Cheers, BNutzer 21:08, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is also the only way to sort {{bio-stub}}s, which would otherwise just get sorted by first name.  slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 14:25, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Music theorists categories[edit]

Hi there! I noticed that you changed a couple of categorizations for music theorists lately. Thanks for all you have done thus far! I realized that you have changed the categories from "music theorists" to "[nationality of person in question] theorists." While I agree that it makes sense to organize theorists according to their nationality, I was wondering if it might be useful to keep both categories in place? This way readers who would like to browse theorists can easily see all music theorists on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Music_theorists and they could also find theorists by nationality. What do you think about this idea? Greetings from Matthias Röder 22:09, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like it. It is not normal practice across other fields. The reason being I think that people are often in five, ten or even twenty specialised categories, and if they were left in the undivided category as well as the main category there would just be too many categories for people to be able to see what was what at the bottom of the article. In many fields there are also lists, which focus on the most notable practitioners of whatever it may be. That's a better way to go. Æthelwold 00:07, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I understand. I started a list of music theorists and we could add all the thoerists there in alphabetical order. From now on, could you please add every theorist of whom you change the category? That would be great! Thanks again! Matthias Röder 07:36, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1/4 rule?[edit]

Hello, please could you tell me where this 1/4 rule exists for categories as I can't see where you have discussed such a thing in your edit history? Thanks Gustav von Humpelschmumpel 21:23, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen it referred to more than once and it makes a great deal of sense. Those five categories on Brando are seriously misleading, as they imply that these attributes define him, when they are trivial to the point of meaninglessness. Æthelwold 19:54, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I restored Category:Americans with Huguenot ancestry as that obviously doesn't indicate any identification. Regards Gustav von Humpelschmumpel 13:28, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Irish furniture designers, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Irish furniture designers has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).
