Great Lakes Areas of Concern The Great Lakes are under attack from the many harmful chemicals and people that live and vacation in the area. Preservation attempts are being made by the US and Canada but the issue should be made more public since it is the public that is causing much of the damage. Much of the area's aquatic life is at risk and each lake has a different and delicate ecosystem that needs to be maintained. Because of this, the task of preserving them is difficult. Thoughts from Josh. Kate, this sounds like a good project. I see there is already a stub article up there, so I've edited your project proposal to link to it. This is a very technical project, and you will presumably be looking at a lot of dense government documents related to the regulatory mechanisms for the AOCs. Have you started poking around for research material yet? My main concern is that you take care in your article not to duplicate general information that what would be better covered elsewhere. For example, if you're writing about Sheboygan River as part of your paper, try to stay focused on why Sheboygan is part of the AOCs and what the status is on cleanup, rather than on general information already covered in the Sheboygan River article. So it will be a little tricky navigating that. But overall I think this sounds like a great project. Hola Kate. So here's the summary I've got for you after reading your article.

Your article has tons of information, and like you've said, there is a lot of imformation out there and it's hard to condense to a certain "frame". There is a lot of information in the article and I believe that it all belongs under the article title. I liked the diversity of sections that the article has to offer. The strongest point of the article is that most of the information is really clear and easy to understand; I'm not confused about anything in the article. Some things I would change/edit: (1) I would suggest expanding the section about What Can You Do. There is a lot of information on the web and in your references' websites that I think have tons of information; (2) also, just make sure you make a Reference section. I felt that i kept up with your topic and became more knowledgable by reading your article. ...So I'm not sure what y'all have going on with workshop. Am I supposed to comment here? Or over at the article talk page? You seem to be doing a bit of both. I'll respond here. I think this is an excellent choice of topic, and you're on your way to a solid article. I think your delineation of causes and sources of pollution in the "Why Are They Areas of Concern?" section is very strong. A few things: 1. Use more in-text citations (footnotes). Whenever you have a fact or quote that you get from a particular source -- say, for example, that a new invasive species enters the lake every eight months -- throw a footnote up there to point us directly to the source. 2. I think you should bring the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement up to the top to help you refocus your article as an encyclopedic entry on the Areas of Concern. One of the most important pieces of information for the reader to know right off the bat is WHO has designated these "areas of concern." You're not writing an article about Great Lakes pollution. You're writing an article about a bureacratic/regulatory structure that has been set up to deal with Great Lakes pollution by naming the "areas of concern." So that's a vital piece of information. 3. I think you should cut the "What You Can Do" section, as it is not encyclopedic and doesn't fit within the scope of this article. You could make an argument that it belongs in an article about preventing water pollution, or even Great Lakes water pollution, but that's not what you have here. You have an article focused on the very specific topic of Great Lakes Areas of Concern and the closer you can stick to that topic, the better your article will be. 4. You can also tone down language like "a major problem" to bring it within the WP:NPOV guidelines. Strive for a formal, encyclopedic tone. 5. As you begin to rework your article as an encyclopedic entry on the "Areas of Concern" you will find a lot of necessary information that is missing from this draft. For example, following this link from your references: I see (a) information about the protocol and agreement that established the term AOC, (b) criteria for inclusion in the AOCs, (c) RAP and LaMP management plans, (d) the IJC regulatory body, etc. All of that belongs in your article. Your job is to explain to us how AOCs are defined, regulated, and cleaned up. So you're off to a great start with what you have now, but focus your energies a little more closely on the AOCs and less on Great Lakes pollution in general. Kate, you're in good shape, but I'd like to see some more sources in the bibliography. Also, you should open the article as a definition of the Great Lakes Areas of Concern, rather than the Great Lakes themselves. You might start with the language that's already up there at the stub. Don't stress out about formatting. I'll help you through it as questions arise, and the model article at User:1013-josh/draft will be a good guide. A few notes: Paragraph breaks and section headers will help you immensely. Instead of using bold text to mark sections, you should create a section header.
