New Zealand Fringe Festival[edit]

Organised by the Fringe Arts Trust (see below), the festival has grown since 1989 from 30 acts in a few venues to more than 100 events in 30+ venues all over the Wellington region. The event lasts for 3 weeks and, in 2009, attracted around 100,000 festival-goers.^[1]

Fringe is an open access festival, meaning anyone can produce a show or a creative project and be involved in this annual event. The performances include music, stand-up comedy, theatre, street performance, multi-media and visual arts Each year, hundreds of volunteers and local members of the community donate their time to help promote and produce the festival.

Sixteen Fringe Awards were handed out after the 2009 Festival, including the inaugral entries to the Fringe Hall of Fame, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords.^[2]

Fringe Arts Trust[edit]

The Fringe Arts Trust (incorporated 1993) is responsible for staging the annual New Zealand Fringe Festival in Wellington, a nationally-recognised fixture in the arts calendar. As a Charitable Trust, it is governed by a board of trustees:^[1]
