I was born in the southern San Francisco Bay Area in California (US) and brought up there -- and this was before and in the very early days of the area's metamorphosis into Silicon Valley. I'm a language geek, and have enough formal training in linguistics to support my habit, but my doctorate is in Comparative Literature. In my day job, I'm a tenured professor of German language and literature and Comparative Literature. I teach at a large Boston-area research university, with a specialization in poetry, especially German and modern, especially Rainer Maria Rilke. But my interests range widely; I also love teaching the "great books" canon, am inclined to philosophical reading, and wish I had alternate lives in which I could investigate all the other fields that I dabble in, all of them having in some way to do with language or artistry or the conduct of life. Translation Studies is another interest. I care a lot about good writing; I've also been trained as a copyeditor and am, for better and worse, semi-obsessive about detail. 2fennario (talk) 00:37, 8 July 2019 (UTC)2fennario
