Inner Vission II is an outdoor standing sculpture made by artist, Chido Johnson. The sculpture is located between Riley Hall of Art and O'Shaughnessy Hall, at the University of Notre Dame, near South Bend, Indiana. Inner Vission II is made of marble, limestone and serpentine on a steel frame. On its base, the sculpture stands 79” tall, consisting of a white head with a black face, and a grey torso without limbs. The artist portrays the body as being racially hybrid as both self-portrait and cultural psychoanalysis.

Inner Vission II’s companion piece, Inner Vission I, was made in 1990 and is located in Old Mutare, Zimbabwe. The correlating works symbolize the identity of the artist as having been raised in Zimbabwe, and later moving to the United States at age 17.

About the Artist:[edit]

Chido Johnson is an artist based in Detroit. He is a 2009 Kresge Fellow and 2009 MacDowell Colony Fellow. Johnson was born and raised in Zimbabwe and Zambia, then moved to the U.S.A. Both his BFA degrees in Sculpture and Painting, with a minor in Drawing, were from the University of Georgia, Athens. Johnson earned his MFA in sculpture from the University of Notre Dame in 2000.

Johnson has worked, exhibited, and taught both nationally as well as internationally. Some of these shows include PAFA Museum in Philadelphia, Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit (MOCAD), the Detroit Institute of Art, Indianopolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA), the Sullivan Galleries in Chicago, Printed Matter, Inc in New York, Umea University in Sweden, the Cortona Study Abroad Program in Italy, and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare, Zimbabwe. His work has been reviewed in the Art Papers, Sculpture Magazine, Bad in Sports as well as other notable publications and catalogues. Currently, he is a full-time associate professor and the section chair of Sculpture at the College for Creative Studies in Michigan.
