Socket SP6 (LGA 4844) is a zero insertion force land grid array CPU socket designed by AMD to support upcoming Epyc server processors based on Zen 4 and Zen 4c. It is designed for server systems targeting infrastructure and edge computing segments.[1][2]

History[edit]

In 2017, AMD released its initial line of Epyc 7001 server processors based on the Zen architecture, on the Socket SP3 platform. The SP3 platform replaced both Socket C32 and Socket G34 platforms for preceding Opteron server processors. Whereas Opteron had two platforms, C32 and G34 to cover low-end and high-performance server markets respectively, the Epyc 7xxx series had only one platform, SP3, to cover all market segments.

AMD would go on to release two more generations of Epyc processors on socket SP3: the 7002 series, based on Zen 2, which released in 2019, and the 7003 series, based on Zen 3, which released in 2021. It was succeeded by Socket SP5 for high-performance server processors in November 2021 with the launch of the Epyc 9004 series, which use the Zen 4 architecture.

Socket SP6 will serve segments of the server market where performance is not a priority but cost, value, small footprint, and low power consumption / heat dissipation are. Examples of this are infrastructure computing and edge computing.

Features[edit]

  • Supports 6 channels of DDR5 ECC RAM.[3][4]
  • Supports 96 lanes of PCIe 5.0.[3][4]
  • Only uni-processor configurations supported (unlike the SP5 platform, which supports multiple processors on one platform).

The SP6 socket retains identical packaging size as the preceding SP3 socket, but has more pins (at 4844 vs. 4094).
