George Neil (26 September 1864 - 5 June 1934) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life[edit]

His father was Thomas Neil (c. 1822 - 8 June 1865), an engine driver, from Glasgow.

His mother was Janet Robertson (born c. 1823 - 11 June 1903) from Paisley.[2] Thomas and Janet married on 15 July 1843 in Paisley.

They had several children. Two did not survive childhood.

George Neil was born on 26 September 1864 in Blythswood, Glasgow.[3]

His brother Thomas Neil (born c. 1848) was a landscape painter.[4]

His brother William R. Neil (born c. 1850) was a commercial clerk.[5]

His brother David Neil (born c. 1854) was an upholsterer.[6]

His brother John Neil (born c. 1856) was a chemist.[7]

An older sister Elizabeth C. Neil (born c. 1853) was a dressmaker.[8]

He had an older sister Ann who was born c. 1863-5 in Glasgow.[9]

Another older sister was Janet born c. 1863.[10]

In 1871 he stayed at 6 West Russell Street in Glasgow.[11]

In 1881 he stayed at 196 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow. He was already a stained glass painter at c. 16 years old.[12]

In 1891 he stayed at 461 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow.[13]

In 1901 he stayed at 251 St, Vincent Street in Glasgow.[14]

In 1903-4 he was at 173 Shamrock Street in Glasgow.[15]
