David Comba Adamson (17 April 1859 - 17 September 1926) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life[edit]

His father was David Kaims Adamson (19 July 1829 - 3 March 1902), a coalminer from Polmont.

His mother was Christina Robertson (c. 1833 - 10 April 1902) from New Cumnock. David and Christine married on 11 November 1849 in Old Monkland in Lanarkshire.

David Comba Adamson was born on 17 April 1859 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire.

He married Jane Cappon (20 October 1854 - 9 February 1934) from Broughty Ferry in Angus. They married at the British Embassy in Paris on 5 August 1889.

Art[edit]

He studied in Paris under Constant and Carolus-Duran.[2]

Death[edit]

He died on 17 September 1926 in Victoria Hospital, Dundee. The death certificate mentions paralysis and heart failure.

From the Aberdeen Press and Journal of Tuesday 21 September 1926:[3]

Death of Dundee Artist. The death had taken place after a long illness of Mr D. Comba Adamson, the well-known Dundee artist. The deceased was a native of Edinburgh, his father was a medical practitioner. He studied art in Paris under leading masters, and latterly had a studio there. Subsequently he went to London, and ultimately settled in Dundee. Mr Adam son's speciality was portrait painting and in this department some excellent work came from his brush, including portraits several well-known Dundonians. He also produced artistic flower pictures and some of them were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Mr Adamson was about 60 years of age.

His portrait of A Breton Girl With Doll[4] and Young Boy At The Sea are known.[5]

His portrait of Professor D. R. Dow as a young boy is at the Crail Museum and Heritage Centre.[6]

His portrait of the chemist James Russell is at Dundee Art Galleries and Museum, [7] as is his work Five o'Clock Tea.[8]

His Male Nude Figure is at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.[9]
