David Alison (18 February 1881 - 14 January 1955) was a Scottish painter.[1] He was a founder member of the Society of Eight.[2]

Life[edit]

His father was Walter Alison.[3]

His mother was Jane Lonie Brown, the eldest daughter of Michael Brown, who worked in H.M. Customs in Dysart. They married in Dysart on 14 January 1878.[4]

David Alison was born on 18 February 1881 in Dysart in Fife.[5]

The family grew up on 11 Quality Street in Dysart.[6]

Death[edit]

He died in 14 January 1955 in Haymarket, Edinburgh at a nursing home.[7][8]

The Fifeshire Advertiser noted:[9]

THE LATE MR DAVID ALISON The death occurred on Friday last week of Mr. David Alison R. S. A., R. P., the noted Scottish portrait painter. Mr Alison, who was born in Dysart in 1881, was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and at the Glasgow School of Art. There he won the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and studied in Italy tor a year. He later gained the Carnegie Travelling Scholarship the Royal Scottish Academy and studied in France and Spain. Returning to Edinburgh in 1911, he was appointed a member the teaching staff of the Edinburgh College of Art. During the First World War, Mr Alison served with the 5th Royal Scots and took part in the Gallipoli campaign. The Royal Scottish Academy elected him an associate in 1910, and was elected academician the R.S.A. in 1922. As a portrait painter Mr Alison enjoyed wide reputation, and exhibited in the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute.
