William Armour (20 August 1903 - 20 January 1979) was a Scottish painter.

Life[edit]

His father was Hugh Thomson Armour (14 July 1872 - 10 January 1947), a carpet designer from Ayr.

His mother was Mary McNeill Turnbull (10 December 1868 - 31 March 1940), a warehouse clerk from Glasgow. Hugh and Mary married on 16 September 1897 in Glasgow.

William Armour was born on 20 August 1903 in Paisley.

He married Mary Nicol Neill Steel (27 March 1902 - 5 July 2000), from Blantyre, in 1927.[1]

He died in Hawkhead Hospital in Paisley on 20 January 1979.[4]

The obituary in The Scotsman of 22 January 1979:[5]

Mr. William Armour, painter, former head of Glasgow School of Art's drawing and painting department, has died in hospital at Paisley. He was 75. He was elected an RSA in 1966 eight years after his wife, Mary, and they became the first husband and wife to be Academicians. Well known for his portraits and landscapes, he exhibited regularly at the RSA and RSW. He is survived by his wife.
