John Ballantyne (25 April 1815 - 12 May 1897) was a Scottish painter.[1] He studied and then taught at Edinburgh's Trustees' Academy.

Life[edit]

John's father was Alexander Thomson Ballantyne (28 April 1776 - 28 May 1847) from Kelso. Alexander worked in publishing with Walter Scott's novels, alongside his brothers James Ballantyne and John Ballantyne.[2]

John's mother was Anne Randall Scott Grant (9 June 1788 - 10 September 1855) from Inverness. Alexander and Anne married on 24 November 1807 in Kelso.

John Alexander Ballantyne was born on 25 April 1815 in Kelso. His younger brother Robert Michael Ballantyne also became an artist, but is better known as the author of adventure stories like The Coral Island.

John married Christina Alice Hogarth (1825 - 7 March 1904) from Berwick, on 3 June 1846 at St. Peter's Church in Berwick.

They had 4 children, all born in Edinburgh: 2 sons and 2 daughters. His daughter Edith Jane Ballantyne became an artist.

In later life John Ballantyne moved to London, before then settling in Wiltshire.

Art[edit]

Ballantyne studied art at the Trustees' Academy under William Allan and Thomas Duncan.[3]

Later Robert Scott Lauder made Ballantyne a headmaster of Life Drawing at the Trustees' Academy.

Death[edit]

He died in Seend in Wiltshire, England on 12 May 1897.
