William Barry (16 April 1836 - 1 December 1908) was a Scottish painter.[1]
Life[edit]
His father was George Barry (28 July 1803 - 30 October 1847) from Forfar.
His mother was Catherine MacBain (1 August 1806 - 13 May 1850). George and Catherine married on 30 June 1827 in Arbroath.
He was born on 16 April 1836 in St Vigeans, near Arbroath.
He married in Edinburgh on 18 October 1862, Eliza Ann Clarke (born c. 1839) from Shoreditch in London.
Their daughter Octavia Barry (born c. 1878 in Leith) became a famous theatre actress and singer[2], performing in The Merry Widow with Leonard Mackay and Adeline Burgon.[3]
Art[edit]
In 1864 he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy his works: Leith Piers From Middle Lighthouse and View From The West Pier, Leith.[4]
Death[edit]
He died on 1 December 1908 in Inverness at his home in 28 Argyle Street.[5]
The funeral was on 5 December 1908 at Inverness Cathedral.[6]

An Inverness Artist — Mr William Barry, a well-known painter of Highland scenery, who passed away at his residence in Argyle Street on Tuesday, was a respected citizen of Inverness, where had resided for a good many years. For some time past, ill-health had kept him indoors, and his burly figure, in knickerbocker suit, had ceased to familiar in the town, but he maintained, until near the end, the bright and cheery disposition of the lover of nature. Mr Barry reproduced on canvas, in his time, ninny striking views of Highland scenery, making his way to all parts of the Highlands in his search for subjects. These he never failed to find, and for a number of years his studio in Church Street had the proportions of a small art exhibition of Highland pictures, the list of which extended into a printed catalogue. During the summer months the visitors to the exhibition were numerous, and they were assured of a genial welcome from Barry, who was a kindly Scot. The deceased, who was 72 years age, survived Mrs Barry and grown-up daughters, the youngest of whom (Miss Octavia Barry) has made a name in musical comedy. The funeral will take place to-morrow.
Works[edit]
His work Dumgoyach, Stirling shows a row of megolithic stones; it is housed in John Sinclair House in Edinburgh.[8]
His work Glen Garry is in the Low Parks Museum in Hamilton.[9]
