John Munro Bell (30 November 1862 - 4 November 1918) was a Scottish painter;[1] and also for a time had a company that manufactured paper with his brother.[2]

Life[edit]

His father was John Duncanson Bell (11 October 1828 - 14 January 1908), a watercolour painter from Dollar.

His mother was Jane Fraser Hogg (29 September 1893 - 1 March 1896) from Edinburgh. John and Jane married on 13 June 1856 in Edinburgh.

John Munro Bell was born on 30 November 1862 in Anderston, Glasgow. His elder brother was the artist Harold Fraser Bell (28 April 1861 - 14 February 1902).

John Munro Bell married Sophia Mary Wedderburn (27 March 1872 - 15 July 1950) in Edinburgh in 1898.

Harold had set up a business H. F. Bell & Company as a paper manufacturer, and John joined the company, but the business went bankrupt at the end of April 1888.[3]

On his mother's death Harold Fraser Bell took his brother John Munro Bell to court for £200. John Munro Bell was the executor of his mother's estate. The claim was complicated by a provision in his mother's will to leave a 'liferent' to her husband.[4]
