Joseph John Bell (c. 1839 - 14 December 1911) was a Scottish geographical draughtsman and painter.[1]
Life[edit]
His father was Robert Charles Bell (1806- 5 September 1872), an artist and line engraver.[2]
His mother was Margaret Constable (born c. 1812). Robert and Margaret married on 29 June 1830 in St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh.
Joseph John Bell was born c. 1839.
He married Margaret Constable Macdonald on 23 April 1878 in Perth.[3]

Death[edit]
He died on 14 December 1911 at his home in Broomieknowe House in Lasswade. The funeral was on 16 December 1911. He was buried in Edinburgh Southern Cemetery.
The value of his estate was £894, 2 shillings and 4 pence.
From The Scotsman of Saturday 16 December 1911:[4]
The Late Mr Joseph J. Bell, Lasswade. — The death was announced yesterday of Mr Joseph John Bell, J. P., Broomieknowe House, Lasswade, who for a long period took much interest in the affairs of the district. Mr Bell resided for many years at Seafield Moor and attained considerable success as a watercolour artist, particularly of landscapes. For twelve years he was Convener of the Lasswade Parish liberal Association and was president of the Loanhead Liberal Association until his removal to Broomieknowe.
From the Dalkeith Advertiser on Thursday 21 December 1911:[5]
LASSWADE. The Late MR J. J. BELL. — The death occurred on Thursday last at Broomieknowe Howie, Lasswade, of Mr Joseph John Bell. J.P., artist. Mr Bell was a native of Seafield, Roslin, and he attained considerable success as a watercolour artist, particularly in landscapes. He took a deep interest in the Lasswade district of Midlothian, and for a long time was convener of the district Liberal Association, and president of the Loanhead body. A great admirer of Mr Gladstone, he treasured many letters written to him by the statesman. Mr Bell is survived by a widow. The funeral took place to Grange Cemetery, Edinburgh, on Saturday.
From the Kilkenny Moderator of Saturday 23 December 1911:[6]
Mr. Joseph John Bell, a well-known artist whose pictures were frequently exhibited. died at Lasswade, Midlothian. Many years ago be entered into a voluminous correspondence with Mr. Gladstone regarding the Armenian atrocities.
