Alexander Kenneth Brodie (4 October 1864 - 1 March 1898) was a Scottish painter.[1] He also served as a Lieutanent in the British military. He was to be placed as Britain's first resident in the middle Niger at Sokoto, at the northwestern border of Nigeria, but when the Sultan of Sokoto refused the British army he was to return back to Britain. He died on his journey homewards.
Life[edit]
His father was Kenneth Sutherland Brodie (c. 1825 - 1 May 1868), born in India, by Caithness parents.
His mother was Isabella Waters Smith (2 February 1828 - 18 May 1897) from Thurso in Caithness. Kenneth and Isabella married on 5 February 1852 in Thurso, Caithness.
Alexander Kenneth Brodie was born on 4 October 1864 at the Port of Menteith in Perthshire.

He was promoted in the military as a volunteer in 1886 to a lieutanent.[4] From the Volunteer Service Gazette and Military Dispatch of Saturday 17 April 1886:
April 10, 1886. 1st Midlothian (Midlothian Coast)—Alexander Kenneth Brodie, Gent., to be Lieutenant (Supernumerary).
He was a member of the Edinburgh Caithness Association.[5]
Art[edit]
He had an exhibit in the Paris Salon exhibition of 1897.[6]
Death[edit]
He died in Las Palmas, Canary Islands on 1 March 1898.[7]
Brodie was supposed to have been the first British resident of Sokoto in their colonial expansion in the middle Niger. However the Sultan objected to the armed escort that Brodie was receiving; and so Brodie was ordered to return to Britain. He died on his journey back.[8]

Brodie. March 1, at Las Palmas, Alexander Kenneth Brodie, of Rutland Square, Edinburgh, third son of the late Kenneth Sutherland Brodie, of Bagonbary, India.
His grave is marked in the Grange cemetery in Edinburgh.[10]
