James Gordon Burgess (18 January 1865 - 5 February 1950) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life[edit]

His father was Gregory Gordon Burgess, known as Gregor, (14 September 1826 - 26 October 1865), an accountant and insurance clerk from Speybridge in the Highlands.

His mother was Agnes Dunlop (15 April 1838 - 1890) from Glasgow. Gregor and Agnes married on 8 September 1857 in Glasgow.

James Gordon Burgess was born on 18 January 1865 in Blythswood, Glasgow.

He married Jane Jackson Hamilton (7 August 1865 - 1913), a farmer's daughter from Closeburn in Dumfriesshire.

His son James Dunlop Burgess (12 January 1904 - 1971) was also an artist.

Art[edit]

He studied at Dumbarton Art School.

Death[edit]

He died on 5 February 1950 in Whitecraigs, 13 Campbell Street in Helensburgh.
