Mary Ellen Nicholl (2 May 1850 - 24 December 1905) was a Scottish painter.[1]
Life[edit]
Her father was Peter Nicholl (born 22 November 1826), a civil engineer and railway contractor from Arbroath. At the time of Mary's marriage he was referred to as Peter Nicholl of Calcutta. He would been known for building India's railways.
Her mother was Elizabeth Smith (born 31 October 1829) from West Auckland in county Durham, England. Peter and Elizabeth married on 25 April 1849 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Mary Ellen Nicholl was born on 2 May 1850 in Sanquhar.
She married Andrew Charles Henderson (9 April 1846 - 14 April 1906), a Greenock shipowner. They married on 29 October 1872 in Lyndoch Place, Anderson, Glasgow. For their honeymoon they went on an extended tour of Europe.[2]
They stayed at 212 Bath Street, Glasgow, before moving to Argyll.[3]
In 1880, the couple were noted as visiting Shandon near Helensburgh for Hydropathic therapy.[4]
Andrew accumulated a lot of wealth and so acquired Shandon House near Helensburgh, as well as property in St. Lucia in the Caribbean. At his death on 14 April 1906 his estate was valued at £136,096. The vast majority of that, £132,446, was estate in the United Kingdom.[5]
Art[edit]
She exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1888 the watercolour: A Southerly Gale Brewing. The following year she exhibited there, the watercolour: Shandon Burn.
Death[edit]
She died on 24 December 1905 at Shandon House, Shandon, Rhu near Helensburgh. The death certificate states she died of Bright's disease, an old fashioned name for nephritis; an inflammation of the kidneys. Also noted is cardiac failure brought on by uremic poisoning i.e. kidney failure.
