Alexander Frew (18 August 1861 - 12 January 1908) was an Scottish painter.[1]

Life[edit]

His father was Alexander Frew [Snr] (12 November 1817 - 4 January 1893), a coke manufacturer and coal master from Glasgow.

His mother was Margaret Frew Salmon (born April 1833) from Glasgow. Alexander [Snr] and Margaret married on 6 August 1857 in Glasgow.

Alexander Frew was born on 18 August 1861 in Glasgow.

He became a doctor and surgeon. He studied at Glasgow, Dublin, Berlin and Paris.

He married the artist Bessie MacNicol (5 July 1869 - 4 June 1904) on 20 April 1899 in Glasgow.

Bessie unfortunately died in the late stages of pregnancy.

Alexander remarried, to Olive Jenevera Jarvis (born c. 1885) from Bath, England; on 7 January 1907 in Glasgow.

His second wife sold their Hillhead house and all of MacNicol's paintings.

Death[edit]

He was found dead on 12 January 1908 at 12 St. James Terrace, Glasgow. The cause of death on the death certificate was named as irritant poisoning and alcoholism.

He is buried in Sighthill cemetery, Glasgow.
