Robert Brassey Dunbar (24 October 1869 - 13 January 1933) was a Scottish painter.

Life[edit]

His father was Neil Miller Dunbar (c. 1845 - 14 March 1899) from Bothwell in South Lanarkshire.

His mother was Emily Lindop (1 January 1848 - 1913) from Wrexham in Wales. They married on 15 November 1865 in Liverpool.

Robert Brassey Dunbar was born in Hutchesontown in Glasgow on 24 October 1869. He was the eldest of Neil and Emily's 6 children.

The family moved from 97 Hospital Street in the Gorbals to 207 Sauchiehall Street to 365 Sauchiehall Street.

In 1901 Robert Brassey Dunbar was classed as a lodger at 365 Sauchiehall Street, with a John Goettler, a watchmaker, being the main tenant.

Art[edit]

His work Springtime was used on the Sotheby Silk First Day Cover in 1995 for the commemorative stamps of Spring that year for the United Kingdom.[1]

Death[edit]

He was admitted to Gartloch Asylum in 1915, in Springburn; and is on the General Register of Lunatics.[2]

He died on 13 January 1933 in Springburn, Glasgow.

Works[edit]

His 1909 work of a twisting lane edged by apple trees was auctioned by Sothebys.[3]

A wooded river with figures crossing a bridge and A Farm Steading, Dusk have been auctioned at Christies.[4]
