James Gaston Faulds (1 April 1869 - 17 February 1947) was a Scottish painter and illustrator. He contributed to The Graphic in 1903.[1]

Life[edit]

James Gaston Faulds was born 1 April 1869 in Clogh, Antrim, Ireland.[2] He was brought up in Scotland from infancy.

His father was James Faulds (born c. 1845), from Antrim in Ireland, an agricultural labourer. His mother was Rose Ann Gaston (c. 1847 - 21 June 1935), from Ballymoney, Antrim in Ireland. The couple travelled to Scotland shortly after James Gaston Faulds was born; Rose Ann's father Alexander Gaston died in Glasgow on 21 December 1873, James Faulds was a witness on the death certificate.

James Faulds and Rose Ann Gaston later married on 15 June 1877 in Glasgow. In the 1881 they were staying in Hutchesontown at 12 South York Street.

James Gaston Faulds married Janet Hill Rodger (6 January 1870 - 1920), known as Jessie and also an artist from Ayrshire, in Govan in 1898.[3] Jessie Hill Rodger was the daughter of Thomas Rodger and Anne Willock.

James Gaston Faulds and Jessie Hill Rodger's son James was born c. 1899.[4]

The young couple stayed at 68 Cambridge Drive in Glasgow.[5][6]

They then moved to 365 Bath Street.[7]

Art[edit]

He exhibited his art at the RSA, the RGI, and the RSW.[8]

Death[edit]

He died in 21 Stirling Drive in Rutherglen on 17 February 1947. The death certificate stated the cause of death was cerebral arteriosclerosis, and that he suffered from that for 2 years.

Works[edit]

Glasgow Museums have a James Faulds collection, featuring old Glasgow landmarks like The Ship Bank, Mumford's Theatre, Saracen's Head Inn, Old College & Tolbooth, High Street, The Briggate and the Molindinar burn.[9]

Scottish Fisherfolk,[10] The Mussel Collectors[11] and The Picnic are known.[12]
